Avett has what appears to be an endless pool of energy, strings, and finger picks to pull from at every show he, his brother, and fellow bandmates play. The Avett Brothers capture the attention of their audience from the start of the concert and hold onto it until the very end as they play songs that range from emotional ballads to loud and energetic numbers (DCU). A far greater shock was the sudden death of 35-year-old Larson from an aortic aneurysm just before his show opened. His death just before the breakthrough success is the stuff of both tragedy and tabloids. Such is our culture. Now Larson's work, along with "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk," the tap-dance musical starring the marvelous young dancer Savion Glover, is mounting a commando assault on Broadway from the downtown redoubts of off-Broadway. Both are now encamped amid the revivals ("The King and I") and movie adaptations ("Big") that have made Broadway such a creatively fallow field in recent seasons.…

Motown Records marketed their releases as an all-inclusive “Sound of Young America” and succeeded in selling their records to both white and black audiences. Motown’s focus on the subject matter of the songs, the presentation of their artists to the public, and the perception that they remained at least neutral on political and social issues aided in their ability to crossover. Suzanne Smith, in Dancing in the Streets: Motown and the Cultural Politics of Detroit, argues that one must zoom out from the activities inside of 2648 West Grand Boulevard and the Top 40 chart to fully understand its history and impact. Furthermore, the conditions for…
