Disobedience In Society
Many people over the course of history have formed images of their “perfect” society, usually falling within the lines of free, fair, and accepting. This desire for perfection has prompted people to express their ideal societies to the world. Unfortunately, this idea of utopia is not achievable. Society will always be problematic, and remain so if people do not publicly announce their disgruntled opinions on these controversial matters. Although perfection is not possible, resistance to issues can bring society closer to the ideal society where everyone is content with what they have and who they are. Just over the past few weeks, people have been out in the streets with signs protesting against Donald Trump’s presidency and sexism towards women. Although no laws or great changes have occurred in society, it has brought some people together under a cause, creating a sense of unity, a rarity today. It is within these marches and protests that the true voices of these movements can be heard as one. Though, it can be argued that these acts of civil disobedience have had a negative affect on society, as some turned violent, causing a greater divide between the two major political parties in the United States. However, in rebuttal, the two parties have always been divided and peaceful protests always have stray members that lash out violently, as seen before in the civil rights movement. Again, if history were to repeat itself, small improvements in society will be seen slowly as time progress, as this is how peaceful resistance works. Ultimately, peaceful resistance positively impacts a free society. While random acts of violence or harsh media critics may paint these civil disobediences in a harsh tone, they have always occurred throughout history and into the modern era.
