Discuss the similarities and differences between the resourced based view of strategy and the industrial organisation (I/O) based view of strategy

The similarities and differences between the two views of strategy, resource-based view (RBV) and industrial organization (I/O) view will be critically discussed. According to Hanson, et al. (2011), the RBV model specifies a firm’s strategy internally to earn above-average returns based on its unique resources and capabilities. Resources such as capital equipments, individuals’ skills, patents and finances are formed into a capability and is managed dynamically to achieve competitive advantages over its rivals. The I/O model specifies a firm’s strategy based on external environment with the characteristics of general, industry and competitor environments (Hanson, et al., 2011). This model allows the firms in an industry to compete on their performance regarding to the threat of new entrants, rivalry among competing firms threat of substitute products, bargaining power of suppliers and bargaining power of buyers. The RBV focuses on internal factors while the I/O model focuses on external factors to achieve above-average returns.
The resource-based model assures the firm to acquire various resources and utilize them to achieve unique capability. To gain potential advantages over the competitors, the firm needs to choose valuable, rare, costly to imitate and non-substitutable resources and capability (Broderick, Hooley & Moller, 1988). However, resources such as human skills and creativity can be imitated and substituted as time passes. Therefore, they must be integrated and managed with potential capability in order to create customer value which can maintain good customer relationships. On the other hand, the I/O model suggests the firm to produce the standard products and services at lower cost than the competitors or the differentiated ones for which the customers are willing to pay at a premium price (Hanson,

    A firm’s implementation of its strategies is determined by its chosen industry’s properties. These include economics of scale, barriers to entry, product differentiation, diversification and the extent of competition in that industry. Along with these properties, the I/O Model for Above-Average Returns includes four underlying assumptions. The first is the pressure and constraints imposed by the external environment that decide what strategies are used to obtain above-average returns. The second is the resources used to aid in the implementation of this set of strategies are assumed to be mobile across the firm. Third, the firms competing within the industry control similar resources that are relevant. Lastly, the organizational decisions made are in the firm’s best interest by maximizing profits. Overall, Ford takes part in the industrial organization model for above average returns. Ford’s strategies are focused on their external environments. For example when the popularity of hybrids and more environment friendly vehicles rose, Ford responded with such cars are the Ford Fusion Hybrid. The external environment has a clear stronger force than the internal capabilities of the firm. Ford’s newer mission is to be “One Ford”, this emphasizes that the strategies are mobile across the firm and any temporary differences will be short lived. Ford and its competitors, have control over the same resources strategically. Dealerships don’t just build anywhere, they find an area where they can be seen, the return on investment is beneficial, and a delivery of product is done with ease. The same is true with their competitors. This would explain why auto dealers from different brands are concentrated in the same area like an auto mall. The goal of any management is to maximize shareholder value, and the leadership makes decisions based on this.…

    The development of the field of strategic management within the last two decades has been dramatic. While its roots have been in a more applied area, often referred to as business policy, the current field of strategic management is strongly theory based, with substantial empirical research, and is eclectic in nature. This review of the development of the field and its current position examines the field’s early development and the primary theoretical and methodological bases through its history. Early developments include Chandler’s (1962) Strategy and Structure and Ansoff’s (1965) Corporate Strategy. These early works took on a contingency perspective (fit between strategy and structure) and a resource-based framework emphasizing internal strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps, one of the more significant contributions to the development of strategic management came from industrial organization (IO) economics, specifically the work of Michael Porter. The structure-conduct-performance framework and the notion of strategic groups, as well as providing a foundation for research on competitive dynamics, are flourishing currently. The IO paradigm also brought econometric tools to the research on strategic management. Building on the IO economics framework, the organizational economics perspective contributed transaction costs economics and agency theory to strategic management. More recent theoretical contributions focus on the resource-based view of the firm. While it has its roots in Edith Penrose’s work in the late 1950s, the resource-based view was largely introduced to the field of strategic management in the 1980s and became a dominant framework in the 1990s.
