For example, when students paraphrase what’s being said, draw little mind maps, and write down their own thoughts, their brains are doing a lot more cognitive processing (Kerr).” When students write their notes, they are required to analyze the material that they are recording, and can therefore can be digested. When students type notes, fractions of the lecture can filter in one ear and out the other. This is called non generative note-taking. “Non generative note-taking occurs when students write down word for word what they hear (Kerr).” Since students are using active or generative learning by using the writing approach, they can recall the information significantly easier than while typing, which leads me to believe that it is a better option, and high school and college students should try writing their…

When I get to the point where I realize I don’t have time to go to the mall with everyone because I have to study for that math test, I will remind myself it is just part of the journey to my Medical Degree in Biochemistry that I will complete in the future. Note taking and note making is one of the most fundamental and important tasks that students must do. It cannot be doubted that a student that takes notes during lectures is more likely to achieve a higher grade compared to a student that does not. However, note taking might not have the positive effect the student wants if it is not done properly. “What to note down, how much to note down and how detailed the notes should be, takes time to develop” (Open University Malaysia [OUM], 2011, p. 92). Thus, this essay will focus on explaining the different methods of note making, how to take notes from printed materials and ways to develop good note taking skills during lectures. But first, an important question needs to be addressed. Why even take notes in the first place?…
