Discipline: School Types
It doesn't take a lot of research to tell us that discipline in school is different today than it was in the 1950s. But it does take some investigation to find out why. Various studies have shown that students who act up in school express a variety of reasons for doing so: * Some think that teachers don't care about them. * Others don't want to be in school at all. * They don't consider goal setting and success in school important anymore. * Students are unaware that their adolescent behaviors will result in punishment they won't like. * Discipline enforcers have to go through long procedures of due process: hearings, specific charges, witnesses, and appeals.
Despite these hurdles, students agree that discipline is needed in schools. One high school student stated: "If there were no discipline, the school would not be distinguished from the street."
So if everyone agrees that discipline is key to safety in school, why do we still have a problem?
Student-Teacher Relationships
In many schools, teachers are intimidated by their students. Out of fear of retaliation, they fail to report problems or ignore them hoping that the students responsible will quit the bad behavior by themselves.
Troubled Students
State and Federal laws require that some special needs students receive special attention. Many adults and school systems believe that "troubled students" are not responsible for their actions, thus they're not punished as severely as other students.
Legal Procedures
Because of the raised awareness of the civil rights of children, the law requires adults to go through expensive, time-consuming and confusing procedures in regards to school discipline. These legal procedures do protect the rights of children, but make it very difficult to stop school discipline problems.
Modeling
Very simply, too many adults fail to model the behaviors they want from students. Modeling the rules that students are to follow should be required of all adults.

    Rather than promoting a safe environment of learning, and opportunity, schools have made it almost impossible to tell the difference between a school yard and a jail yard. Due to “zero tolerance” policies, police presents, and relying on suspensions and expulsions for minor infractions, students are missing out of their education. There once was time when disciplinary issues could be resolved by school administrators, but now students are either suspended or expelled on the spot. Students who have never been suspended or expelled are at less of a risk for incarceration than those that have been. There are approximately 3.3 million suspensions and over 100,000 expulsions each year. Zero tolerance policies were first adopted in the mid 1990s, since then the rates have been on a constant climb. Even though, the rates of school violence has been declining, suspension and expulsion rates are still rising. Zero tolerance policies have especially affected elementary and middle school children. “Seven of every thousand pre-schoolers are expelled from preschool programs, over three times the rate of expulsions in grades K-12” according to SentencingProject.org. This is not just bad for the students that get expelled but for everyone. Turning schools into “secure environments”, with school police, and staff that looks down on every mistake you…

    As an educator, it is important that I not only know how to effectively deliver the curriculum to my students, but to also be able to effectively manage my classroom. Managing the classroom is not just writing disciplinary referrals or assigning detentions, but also includes making the proactive decision to prevent and mitigate conflicts as they arise in the classroom. While all conflicts obviously cannot be prevented, teachers must be instrumental in guiding students to resolving their conflicts. Thomas Lickona (1991) touches on guiding students through conflicts. He writes, “even if students have the benefit of a conflict curriculum, social skill training… many will still have trouble applying these learnings… In these situations the teacher usually has three tasks: (1) Helping students understand… (2) Helping students work out a fair solution… and (3) Helping children practice the behavioral skills…. (294-295). While some of these suggestions may not be applicable to high school students in some instances, I think that Lickona’s suggestions have merit. In my classroom, I could certainly incorporate helping my students practice good behavioral skills. I would definitely focus on the moral aspects of discipline and behavior, because students can relate to how they would like to be treated, using the “what if” scenario. Morality of mind is always an incentive to encourage a child to behave in the proper way. Community involvement is not always that easy at my school, but using our parent liaison could be a step in that direction. Maybe the liaison could reach out to the parents when teachers cannot.     When it comes to special education, discipline is a major concern in this area because many students are incessantly being expelled for their behavior issues that are caused by their disabilities. With the previous law students were excluded from school and received long suspension time because of their behavioral problems but when the new law was passed in 2004 students that are disable, is entitle to a free appropriate education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and can no longer be expel from school if their behavior is due to their disability.     In my opinion it is crazy to not be concerned with discipline in the classroom. Discipline in the classroom to me is top priority. I believe that without discipline in the classroom there is no order and that the students do not know there limits when no ground rules are set. Of course, problems are a part of a teacher's job, but discipline is not the teacher's responsibility. A teacher should not be responsible to teach students how to behave while at school.     In my experience, discipline in high schools has always been over the top. From what I heard, it has gotten so much worse since I left. Now the students need not only uniforms (just a strict dress code really) but also I.D. tags that they have to wear around their necks like cattle. They are herded from one class to the next with teachers and rent-a-cops waiting down every hallway to prod along the stragglers. Even when I was there, a student needed a good reason to be anywhere, and even with hall passes they were hassled by monitors on patrol.
