Dirt Road Drifting
Dirt Road Drifting The fresh air whizzed through our hair as we drifted around the loose, gravely corner into the neighbor’s drive way where we parked the four-wheeler alongside the long line of cars. The five of us jumped off the dusty wheeler and began to wander around. “Well this is fun!” Luke exclaimed sarcastically. It didn’t take us long to figure that the neighborhood party wasn’t going to be anything spectacular. The parents all sat around the fire drinking and chatting with one another. My older brother Luke, who’s fifteen, 2 years older than me, popped down the tailgate and sat down. The four of us joined him as we tried to brainstorm something to entertain us. Now I don’t know whose idea it was but we managed to get my dad’s truck keys to drive back to the house and grab the go-cart. Luke drove with Uriah and Hadassa, my neighbors, sitting next to him as Austin and I sat on the tail-gate, dragging our feet across the top of the dry dirt road. Now Uriah, who happens to be thirteen, is probably not the smartest kid you will ever meet. He’s home-schooled and doesn’t have the opportunity to hang out much with kids his age. His sister Hadassa is much like him; with maybe a slight bit more common sense as she is one year older. As we pulled up to the house, Austin jumped off and ran over to start up the go-cart engine. Since it could only ride two people, Luke had to drive the truck back with Uriah and Hadassa. “Let’s go!” I yelled to Austin. Austin and I followed behind on the go-cart doing fish tales and kicking up rocks and dust. When we got back to the neighbors I switched over to the four-wheeler with Hadassa and Austin on back. Uriah rode with Luke on the go-cart and we started racing down the dirt roads towards our childhood lake. The four-wheeler went much faster so we arrived there way before them. Bored waiting, we started back up, whipped around, and raced back to find them. By this time it was already dark. We were young and dumb, and

The poignant feeling of anticipation and excitement enthused us as we piled into Grandpa’s old beat up van. A sense of invincibility enveloped us as we started our twelve hour trek to Branson, Missouri. This serenity soon shattered when Luke began to throw up all over my seat. I sat horrified, trapped by the luggage in front of me. “Stop the van!” I screamed. Covered in bright pink Double Bubble puke, I bolted from the vehicle. I had tried to warn Luke earlier, but he did not listen. As the twentieth piece entered his mouth, my predictions turned into reality. After the ordeal, we cleaned up, loaded into the van, and started our journey once again.…

One night in August of 2014, my mom, Mika and I grabbed a flashlight and walked out the door into the dark night. My mom flipped on the flashlight and shone it on the bumpy path before us so we didn’t accidentally step into a ditch or trip on anything in the way. Normally nobody ever did much in the village after dark, but tonight was special.…

“Yes mom, I know where to go”, Simon sputtered as he hung up and drove himself along with his little sister, Lydia, to East Glacier Falls summer camp. Their mom had seen an advertisement in the paper a few months back about after school recreational activities boosted cognitive power and improved test scores, but he thought that was made up by summer camps to get concerned parents to spend excessive amounts of money. As he pulled up and started to unload the luggage from the trunk he noticed a girl around his age limp over to the car and greet his sister. Walking over, he politely greets the girl and she introduces herself as Carmen. The children socialize briefly before the camp counselor hurried them to the mess hall. Once all the young campers…

As we were going down the river there was a log in the river it was barely poking out of the water. Everyone avoided the log except for Sam and Jack. They crashed into the log and their canoe flipped and all their gear tumbled out. One of the troop’s bins popped open and some of the cooking supplies fell out and Timmy had to swim and retrieve all the missing pieces of equipment. As Timmy was retrieving everything rain clouds started to form and it started to drizzle then we heard thunder and saw lightning so we had to stay on the beach for thirty minutes until the rain passes. Thirty minutes turned into an hour and an hour turned into two hours. So to pass the time we raided the snack bag and ate almost all the snacks. There was another group from a camp that had to stop on the bank and there was probably 300 kids on one small bank. After the rain passed we were all soaking wet. We were soaking wet all the way back to the canoe shop. Then when we got there we had to pack up and we started home. Another 7 hours back…

Fortunately, I had to carry all the light supplies like marshmallows and towels. We walked about four miles into the overgrown weeds and prickers until there was a small parting in the greenery. I sat on a log near the firepit and watching Chloe and Lexy set up the tents. A few hours of adventuring and partying went by it was now nightfall. The fire had been lit, by then it was pitch black out only the fire lighting up our faces. Freshman year we started playing the game one truth and two lies, a childish game we played out of boredom. We had been playing for about thirty minutes before we got bored and it was the last turn of the game. Lexy grinned “I’ll go, I have a fish named Tom, I have a trampoline, or I am a Serial killer.” We all laughed at the idea of Lexy being a Serial killer then chloe spoke up, “it’s the trampoline I know it!” she smiled knowing she got it correct. Lexy shook her head, “Alright, then the fish named Tom.” I said hesitantly. She shook her head again at that moment Chloe and I stopped laughing and stared at Lexy. After two minutes Lexy spoke up “Honestly, I was out shopping I had a 50% off coupon and the man at the register wouldn't take it! We fought for five minutes then I left, but I waited till…

“Dong, Dong, Dong” that was the final bell of 7th grade. The hallways quickly filled with students dashing outside their classrooms. “Alex! Alex, wait for me” I heard a familiar voice cry out. “There you are Stacy, I was starting to wonder if you got run over by the crowd” I frolicked. “So, what did you think of doing this summer?” Shrugging Stacy replied with a simple yet disappointing “I don’t know.” I had come up with many ideas that I was eager to share but I was willing to wait until tonight, at our sleepover. As we made our way across the busy streets of Freemont we started chatting about movies to play tonight. It was the month of June and the sun was scorching hot, I felt as if we were walking close to a volcano that was about to erupt. A blast of cold air hit me as soon as I pushed open the front door. Getting indoors was a great way to escape the heat, and the smell…
