There is one concern that I have in regards to the reporting of revenues and accounts receivable. My sole concern is the approach that management takes in reporting the company’s revenue. It was mentioned that management maintains a conservative approach in its accounting for accounts receivable, therefore it would be ideal to assume that they utilize the same approach for revenue recognition. However, auditors should thoroughly inspect RedPack’s revenue recognition approach…

Many medical organizations with average patient accounts receivable that are greater than a specified amount, not including the allowance, must compute and record an Allowance for Doubtful Accounts on their balance sheet. This accounts receivable balance should be re-evaluated on an annual basis to determine reporting status. Often, it is not known which specific accounts receivable invoices will be uncollectible. An allowance is therefore established to estimate the value of those receivables believed to be uncollectible. This entry should be “recorded so the income statement and balance sheet are fairly stated at the amount expected to be collected in receivables, thus satisfying the matching principle. The entry creates a contra accounts receivable balance. When netted against the gross total of accounts receivable, the true value of the receivables is reported” (FMS,…

The tactic of direct selling is one that isn’t a popular approach in sales, unless you’re part of the small division that thrives on it. Direct selling is face-to-face selling from a fixed business location and therefore, a form a nonstore retailing. There is less public awareness of most direct selling firms as they do not advertise as much as major retailers. Almost all direct sellers are independent contractors and according to a survey of district sellers conducted for the District Selling Association in 1997, a substantial amount of workers worked because they either likes and/or used the product or service themselves or because they enjoyed the social aspect of direct selling. The majority of direct selling firms are small, privately owned firms created and operated by entrepreneurs, many of whom often want a low public profile. The most popular form of one-to-one direct selling is network or multilevel marketing and is used by about 95% of all independent contractors. Direct sellers in this multilevel program are not only rewarded for the sales they personally make but the sales from the people they recruit make.…

Phillip’s first assignment was to commence planning process for a review of the revenue cycle - accounts receivables department at BookStore Company Limited. Phillip as a part of this process carried out a preliminary survey. The preliminary survey indicated that severe staff reductions at the audit location had resulted in extensive amount of overtime among accounting staff. Accounting payrolls are nearly equal to prior years, and many key controls such as segregation of duties, are no longer in place. The accounting supervisor now performs all operations within the cash receipts and posting process, and has no time to review transactions generated by the remaining members of the department.
