Direct Characterization Of Benjamin In Animal Farm
You would think that elderly people would be the wisest of us all, so wise that they could be a leader in fact, well at least I think that they could, they know so much, more than us teenagers know. All elderlies are smarter than us but they all don’t have the same personality, some could be irritating, others joyful. Would the irritating elderlies fit to be a good leader, who’d they want to be one at all? In Animal Farm, George Orwell uses indirect characterization of Benjamin to illustrate his role on the farm, revealing that he’s not suitable to rule the farm as a leader. Benjamin’s detachment in Animal Farm came from his stereotypically stubborn and crotchety personality. Benjamin isn’t your average animal on the farm, he acts in a way to hate the other animals, he is devoted to being around and caring for Boxer at all times, no matter what’s going on around the farm, when Boxer was injured Benjamin was there to aid him, “He seldom talked, and when he did, it was usually to make some cynical remark…Alone among the animals on the farm he never laughed. Benjamin, detached from the rebellion but he did still criticize the rebellion even though he didn’t care about it, guided by a skeptical philosophy, all showing the same meaning, he’s not fit to be the leader of Animal Farm, he doesn’t care about anything on the farm as George Orwell has shown us, Benjamin is the type of person that only cares about himself and Boxer, no-one else. Not everyone is capable to be a leader, it’s just that we all are unique, maybe Benjamin didn’t want to be the leader of Animal Farm in the first place.     The first thing that the animals changed about the farm is the name. They changed the name of the farm from Manor farm, to Animal farm. They all learn the song "beasts of England" that Old major had taught them before the rebellion. They have also made up 7 commandments that all animals on the farm must live by. They use the phrase "four legs good, two legs bad," to remember the 7 commandments. They use this because not all animals on the farm can read, but sense the rebellion a lot of them have learned, or have learned few letters of the alphabet. The pigs can read and write perfectly. They have made the majority of animals to believe that they are the most intelligent animals on the farm, so they should be in charge.     Throughout the novel, the pigs manipulate their superiority towards other animals using trickery and education to justify their behavior and actions. Based on the rationale that the pigs were the self-proclaimed “brains of the farm”, they thought they had the right to reside inside the farmhouse. Despite the skepticism of the other animals, Squealer manages to persuade them that everything they were doing was within the constitution that they had set forth. The original constitution explicitly stated that “no animal shall sleep in a bed”, however the pigs unbenounced to the other animals changed the rule to “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. In addition to that, it was also stated that Napoleon, who was now known as the leader, deserved nothing less than the farmhouse as a residence. Some of the animals were totally convinced by Squealer's justification of their actions. Upon hearing what Squealer had to say, Boxer adopted the motto “Napoleon is always right” , showing his lack of understanding to what was going on. He is so caught up in following Napoleon and listening to what Squealer had to say that he can no longer understand that he is being manipulated and controlled by them. Boxer also doesn’t realize that what was going on was truly not better than prior to the revolution. His repetition of this phrase paired with his unparalleled work ethic show his misplaced loyalty towards Napoleon and his ways. Others however, were surprised to hear that Napoleon was using the farmhouse kitchen as a dining room and the drawing room as a recreation room. Animals such as Clover questioned what they were told. Her doubt was partially dissolved, however, when she learned that the constitution actually allowed for sleeping in a bed without sheets. This displays the trickery and misleading nature of the pigs by taking advantage of the illiteracy of the other animals.
