Around the world, the assumption has been that everyone will make the correct choices when it comes to workplace attitude and ethics. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are situations where employees will encounter unethical situations and either choose to ignore them, become a full participant, or expose the issue. One’s personal decision can either make or break their future of economic earning potential or opportunities. Ignoring small beginnings in life can potentially lead to the loss of gaining the explosive prospects that are surfacing.…

Every organization has a standard or code of ethics every employee is expected to adhere to. Not everyone within an organization share the same moral values or principles, this is due to cultural differences and understanding ethics competency. Ethics competency is described as the knowledge, skills and abilities to incorporate values and principals that distinguish right from wrong when making decisions and choosing behaviors ( Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011p.10). How one determines right from wrong is based on their personal beliefs but behavior and conduct within an organization should be universal, in order for an organization to be effective. Ethical issues within an organization is common because of personal differences , these ethical issues influence the decisions employees make daily (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011). Lawrence Kohlberg’s model of moral development suggests there are stages through which individuals evolve, ranging from the lowest stage obedience and punishment orientation, to the highest stage; universal ethical principles (Hellriegel &…

    Uncivility In Workplace

However, workplace incivility has been a newer term in the plethora of research available on unethical behaviors (Hanrahan & Leiter, 2014). Workplace incivility is an umbrella term that refers to low-intensity deviant behaviors with ambiguous intent to harm the target, in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect. These uncivil behaviors are typically rude and discourteous, displaying a lack of regard toward others and often include demeaning remarks and activities like not listening to others (Andersson & Pearson, 1999; Porath & Pearson, 2009). A dissection of the above definition, points out three components of workplace incivility: violation of workplace norms and respect, ambiguous intent, and low intensity (Andersson & Pearson, 1999). The very first part is a violation of organizational norms. Although organizations have their unique work culture yet they all agree on certain minimum acceptable norms, expectations and interactional conduct from its employees. Uncivil acts disturb this kind of agreement and unsettle the very well-being of the organization as well as its employees (Andersson & Pearson, 1999; Lim, Cortina, & Magley, 2008). The second component is the ambiguous intent behind the workplace uncivil behavior. Research…

Ethical workplace has been a controversial issue since years ago. A huge majority of the workforce often list being ethical as one of the top factors they want in a business organization or a firm. Despite having formal cultural system in a firm, there are still unethical behaviors arising within them. These people bring negative impacts to the firm and are usually known as the “bad apples”. Up till date, no one can firmly point out whether the cause for such action is due to individual personality or the environment of the work place. Nonetheless, in my point of view, I think that formal cultural system within a firm is the most important factor in creating an ethical workplace.…

A person would be considered to be acting in a deviant manner within a social setting if they are violating the established social “norm” within that particular culture. What causes a human being to act in certain ways is a disputed topic among researchers. There are three types of researchers that have tried to answer this question. There is the psychological, biological, and the sociological approach. With all of the studies that have been performed, not one group has provided an exact reason or explanation as to why people behave in a deviant manner. Although sociologists’ theories have not been disproved as often as the psychologists’ and biologists’ theories because their experiments are too hard to define and no one definition for deviance is agreed upon by all experimenters (Pfuhl, 1980, p. 40), the sociological perspective has provided the most information concerning why people exhibit deviance. The definition of deviant behavior is considered to be broad with multiple viewpoints which makes it complicated and difficult to find an accurate answer (Pfuhl, 1980, p. 18). This is why this topic is so important in the study of sociology. Sociologists have more information, and therefore may be closer to finding the best explanation for the major contributing factors in explaining the development of deviant behavior(s) within a certain culture. For this reason, the main focus of this paper is based on the sociological stand point of deviance based upon the Social Learning Theory and social reaction(s) to deviant behavior(s).…

Unethical behavior has become an increasingly prevalent issue in today’s workplace. It is a sad truth that in every workplace, there are always employees who take part in unethical behaviors, mine is not an exemption. In fact, if an assessment of my workplace in terms of ethical behavior would be conducted basing on what I have learned in studying work ethics for three sessions now, I can honestly say that it will most likely result to a poor rating. Ethics is a word so familiar that everyone seems to be aware of it yet very few understand what it really means. I am one among those who assumed that good work ethics is simply manifested by working hard, being on time or being respectful to others. Knowing what is wrong and what is right in a workplace was once my simple perception of the word work ethics. Studying work ethics made me realize that there’s a lot more to good ethics than just by simply working hard. Having a good attitude is a paramount to having good work ethics. It is professionalism, diligence, caring about my work and to the people I work with. Being able to distinguish what is right from wrong is pointless unless I am determined to do the right thing always. I cannot explain work ethics in its truest sense but I hope that by sharing my personal experience towards this subject, I could at least impart even bit knowledge about it.…
