In this activity you’ll make use of some of the techniques and evidence that paleontologists work with to determine the identity of different fossils to establish the particular time period in which those creatures lived.

Most fossil digs take place in remote places where it is hot and dry and dirty. But one outstanding (and famous) site for Pleistocene fossils is right in the middle of downtown Los Angeles: The La Brea Tar Pits.

Check out this site to learn about bones that have been preserved, not in layers of sediment, but in bubbling oil. Hit reset until you are sure you have seen fossils of every dinosaur listed below. You have resources on the page that include the Dinosaur Guide, a geological time scale, and a metric ruler. Note that the ruler is a TOTAL of 50 cm long (every tick mark = 1 cm). To measure half-lives: The half-life of a radioactive element is the time it takes for half its atoms to decay into the daughter produce. When two half-lives have passed, one fourth of the original isotope atoms remain and 3/4 of them have turned into the daughter product. (The math is VERY simple. Don’t overthink it).

    This task would go by a lot quicker if all fossils came with a time stamp. But when it comes down to it, two fossil dating techniques seem to unmask themselves as accurate ways of dating fossil and or other elements. Relative and radiometric dating are both extremely effective, although they vary in techniques.They do have some similarities. A few similarities between the two would include the fact that they are, obviously, both able to approximate an age for organic and non-organic elements. They both have the ability to find the ages on organic and non-organic elements using predetermined knowledge of the world around those elements. Both exercise the brain’s ability to work out difficult scientific and mathematic equations. As far as similarities go, the list has all in all come up short, but the differences are drastic. Some differences between relative and radiometric dating are the fact that while relative dating uses linear sedimentary rocks and stratigraphy to estimate the age of the element, radiometric dating uses the decaying of isotopes in organic and non-organic elements to be able to calculate an almost exact ago on the fossil or artifact. Personally I think that’s totally rad. They also vary in dependability. Relative dating has multiple outlying, constantly changing variables, as well as not very liable information.     In the area where we discovered these fossils, there are known volcanoes that are active or that were active in Ethiopia. Our first dating method we used was radiometric dating, this method relies on the decay of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes (WoldeGabriel, 2009). When we first uncovered the fossils we saw that is was between two layers of volcanic ash and the ash had been deposited in the fossils. Once the dating method was done each fossil dated back to 4.4 million years ago (WoldeGabriel, 2009). To back up the date, I used another method called Biostratigraphic dating which uses the association of fossils in the strata to determine each layer’s approximate age (Shook, 2016).
