Digors Chapter Summaries
The title of the book introduces one of the main characters, Digory, who is the nephew of Mr. Andrew Ketterly, a minor magician. The story begins in London during the summer of 1900 where two children, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer who live in a row of connected houses, meet while playing in their gardens and decide to travel through the passages in the attic to get into a vacant house and explore it.

In place of discovering an abandoned house, the children find themselves to have appeared into a forbidden study room that belonged to Digory's Uncle, Andrew. When Uncle Andrew realizes that these children were in his study, he pretends and tires to scare the children by telling them that he would keep them captive, but later feels sympathetic and lets them go. As Polly was leaving he gave her a present of a yellow ring touching which, Polly vanishes. Digory is told that Polly had been sent to an alternate world and the only way that she could be saved was if Digory put on the yellow ring himself and followed her. Digory took with him a pair of green rings that were meant to bring

The woods seemed to be magical as the children took some time to remember who the other was. There were many pools like the one Digory emerged out of and the children inferred that every pool led to a different world. The children went into one of the pools and found themselves in a world with a red sun and no other life. Digory was curious and wanted to explore the ruins. They stumble into a room with wax figures that were life size dressed in royal costumes. Digory cheekily rang a large magical bell in the center of the room causing one of the wax figures to wake up. Her name was Jadis, the last ruler who was the queen in the realm of Charn. Jadis scared the children when she discloses to them that she created a spell to demolish each living animal in

Mr. Gawande starts his literature on washing hands. He introduces two friends a microbiologist and an infectious disease specialist. Both work hard and diligently against the spread of diseases just like Semmelweis who is mentioned in the chapter. Something I learned, that not many realize, is that each year two million people acquire an infection while they are in the hospital. Mainly because the clinicians only wash their hands one-third to one-half as many times as they should. Semmelweis, mentioned earlier, concluded in 1847 that doctors themselves were to blame for childbed fever, which was the leading cause of maternal death in childbirth. The best solutions are apparently the sanitizing gels that have only recently caught on in the U.S. Then there was an initiative to make the sanitizing easier for all. The engineer Perreiah came up with solutions that gave the staff more time which was revolutionary in itself but the format worked only under his supervision. After he left it all went down the drain, so, Lloyd a surgeon who had helped Perreiah decided to do more research and was excited when he encountered the positive deviance idea, the idea of building on people’s capabilities instead of trying to change them. The idea worked and even got funding for ten more hospitals across the country. At the end of the chapter Dr.Gawande ponders upon the idea of how many he has infected because of his lack of cleansing.…

The first reason Digory should not have rung the bell in the unfamiliar world is that Digory and Polly had no knowledge on where they were. The two almost forgot where they stood in the Wood; they could have easily forgotten where they were stepping in the mysterious world and would have not remembered how to get back. They should not have even been wondering…

    Dictee Chapter Summary

Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s book Dictee defies categorization, blending media such as poetry, historical texts, and images in order to form a combination of an autobiography and a work of art. The combination of mediums that form the book is not just a complication of Dictee--it is fundamental to the way we read and understand the work. Through the confusion inherent in approaching Cha’s writing and her use of text (for reasons as simple as the inclusion of French and ), the reader is allowed and encouraged to view the challenge and complexity as a reflection of the characters and perspectives contained within the novel. Dictee is concerned with language as a part of “being”-- speech is portrayed as a tool for affirming one’s identity. As such,…

My first impression of Stiff, just by the name, wasn’t the most pleasant reaction. When I flipped to the back cover and saw, “Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives our bodies postmortem” I was slightly confused at how an author could take such a heavy topic and make it humorous. As I began to read each page, Roach’s style of humor and brutally honest writing began to show. She had taken a heavy topic into a light and witty point of view. Before reading the book, I had little clue about the extraordinary, heroic, and undercover lives of cadavers. Now that I have finished the book, I have new knowledge about the lives of cadavers I thought I would never have received.…
