Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants
Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants Digital natives and immigrants are the one that move technology innovation around. What is digital native or immigrant? Marc Prensky tells us that our students today are all ‘“native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet” (Prensky, 2001). Digital Natives are young people that were born in the late 1990’s. Marc prenskey defines digital immigrants “were not born into the digital world but have, at some later point in our lives, become fascinated by and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology” (Prensky, 2001). Digital immigrants are all the baby boomers and early 1980’s born people. After a long study of this topic I learned that the only difference between the two groups is that one group has more contact with technology, while the other group slowly but surely starts to get involved in our high tech era. Robert sylwester tells us that “we’re a social species with a long juvenile development, so it's essential for humans to master how the world works, and especially the body and verbal languages that drive social interaction” (Sylwester,2009). I find that to be so true about how we migrate to try and keep up with the new technology that is being invented every day. I can call myself a Digital Native even if I was born in the mid 80’s I was surrounded by new technology due to my father’s job. I was the first one out of all my friends to receive a cell phone. I was 9 when I got my first computer and it didn’t take too long for me to get familiarized with the computer complex components, and let us not forget my era had the Nintendo and Atari.
