digestion and enzymes
TASK 1: The main components of a healthy diet.

How the diet and energy requirements of the following individuals vary to meet their specific needs:

- An 18 month old baby - A 17 year old girl - A man/woman working physically in the building trade - A pregnant woman - A lactating woman - A 70 year old man/woman.

TASK 2: Explain the mechanical and chemical digestion.

(a) Ingestion (b) Digestion (c) Absorption (d) Assimilation (e) Egestion

TASK 3: The process of digestion involves mechanical and chemical digestion along with the process of:

1. Ingestion 2. Digestion 3. Absorption 4. Assimilation 5. Egestion

Using either a starch molecule or a fat molecule explain the journey from the mouth to the anus and indicate clearly points at which mechanical and chemical digestion are taking place:

Points to consider:
• The route taken by the molecule
• How and where the molecule is gradually broken down along the route
• How the digestive products are taken up (absorption)
• How the absorbed molecules are used by the cells (assimilation)

TASK 4: Explain the structure of the ileum and the ultrastructure of the epithelium in relation to its secretory and absorptive functions.

(a) Explain the characteristics of enzymes. (b) Explain the lock and key theory of enzyme action. (c) Locate and explain the role of important digestive enzymes.

TASK 5: Enzymes are involved in anabolic and catabolic reactions:

a) Define the terms anabolic and catabolic reactions b) Give 3 examples of anabolic and 3 examples of catabolic reactions.

The gastrointestinal tract starts with the mouth, which leads to the gullet via the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and ends at the anus. In due course of the journey, the ingested food is broken down by both physical and chemical means to release nutrients which are absorbed into the blood stream. The ingested food is physically broken down in the mouth by chewing so as to reduce its size for increased surface area over which enzymatic reaction will take place. Enzymatic reaction is known as digestion and this is defined as the chemical breakdown of the ingested complex food molecules by the action of biological enzymes, into simplest form that can be absorbed into the blood stream and assimilated into living cells. In human beings, various components of the ingested food are digested and absorbed at various sections of the alimentary canal .…
