Differentiated Instruction Paper
Differentiated Instruction Differentiated instruction is a process to approach teaching and learning for students with differing abilities in the same class. The intent of differentiating instruction is to maximize each student’s growth and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is assisting in the learning process (Polloway, Patton, and Serna, 2005). It’s an individualized instructional method. It is used to help students with diverse needs learn using a general curriculum. There are several approaches to using differentiated instruction when teaching learners with cultural or special needs. Every student has different learning styles, behaviors, and interests. It is up to teachers to meet state and district standards when teaching different learners no matter their needs. There are several ways to make sure students meet these standards. Kapusnick and Hauslein (2001) list the most common instructional strategies as acceleration, curriculum compacting, independent study, flexible grouping, independent-learning centers, complex questions, tiered activities, and contracts. Students who show mastery of instructional material through preassessment can learn at their own pace, acceleration. Curriculum compacting condenses learning and allows students to move ahead of material already learned while staying on grade level. During independent study, students progress at their own pace until they master a task by a due date agreed upon by the teacher. Teachers use flexible grouping based on students’ needs, interests, and abilities to allow students with similar capabilities to work together. Independent-learning centers provide students with remediation opportunities by investigating a topic in depth. In a differentiated classroom, the teacher asks complex questions that are open-ended, appeal to higher-order thinking skills, allow adequate wait time for answers (more than the traditional 1-3 seconds), and provide opportunities for peer

The learning journey undertaken by each learner is different as everyone has different learning needs, speeds and styles that can be influenced by personality types, this means it is vital to plan differentiated learning outcomes to meet the needs of higher level learners, ensuring they are not held back, this has to be done while making sure slower learners are not left behind. Differentiated learning is crucial in order to ensure ‘all’ learners successfully complete learning outcomes and reach their full potential. To achieve this I will continually assess progress, gain and give feedback and provide extra support where necessary.…

In order to determine the individual’s need for training, the staff should take a pre- assessment which measures the individuals knowledge and understanding of differentiated instruction, their own learning styles and preferred modes of knowledge demonstration, as well as interest and multiple intelligence inventories. The data collected can be then used to develop a plan of instruction, and ultimately, a detailed timeline for acquiring training and implementation of differentiated instructional strategies in the classroom. A well researched and planned timeline can facilitate a smooth…

Special education is defined as “specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student” according to Hallahan, D., Kauffman, J., and Pullen, P. (2012). The student that I chose to interview is currently age 25 and completed her special education program at the age of twenty-one. Due to the fact that the student was diagnosed as being mentally retarded at an early age, the mother was interviewed along with the student. In the state of Mississippi special education students are allowed to stay in school under the Exceptional Education Program until the age of twenty-one.…

When I arrived on the campus of Southern University where the C.E.L.T program is housed I observed the routines and skills the students had acquired. Everyone knew their role and followed the classroom’s expectations. The C.E.L.T program is an extension of the Caddo Parish School Board Special Education Department. After graduation from high school, students transition to this program which is housed on the campus of a local university. The field experience was completed between the dates of Thursday, February 14- Friday, February 15, 2013. I completed ten hours of field experience in this classroom setting assisting the teacher in differentiated instruction and reinforcement. The class was comprised of students with intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional/behavior disabilities, all of which received instruction in one setting.…

I demonstrate the belief that all students can learn by unambiguously stating high expectations and then by doing everything within reason to help each student reach these learning objectives to the best of his or her individual ability. Therefore, I differentiate instruction so that each student is both challenged and capable of gaining knowledge appropriately. For students who need extra assistance, I offer scaffolding support in the form of visual aids, larger font, vocabulary word definitions, or other hints that allow the student to better understand. For any student who is able to work above grade level, I offer additional or expanded learning options designed to encourage the student to work well beyond minimum requirements. In addition, I actively avoid…
