CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. NATURE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
In educational institutions, success is measured by academic performance, or how well a student meets standards set out by local government and the institution itself. As career competition grows even fiercer in the working world, the importance of students doing well in school has caught the attention of parents, legislators and government education departments alike. Measuring of academic performance of students is challenging since student performance is product of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine the different factors that affect the academic performance of the students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba.
B. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The study is conducted to determine the different factors that affect the academic performance of the students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba.
C. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This paper is a study of the factors affecting the academic performance, the ability to study and remember facts, of the student of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba. Specifically, it aims to discuss the following points:
1. What are the factors that affect the academic/school performance of the students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba?
2. Do social factors affect the students’ of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba academic performance?
3. Do psychological and environmental factors also affect the students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba’s academic performance?
D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM
The author believes that this study will contribute to the following persons:
Students. This can serve as a guide on better understanding on how to improve their school/academic performance.

    There are many problems that we may encounter upon studying this research. One of the problems that can affect the behavioral and academic performance of the graduating High School students is having poor study habit. When students earn a below average grade on a test or a report card, it does not necessarily mean that they did not study hard enough. There are many intelligent children who do not perform well in school, not because they cannot comprehend classroom lessons, but because of external factors that affect their academic success. Several studies found this problem challenging and therefore, efforts have to be exerted in order to determine its root cause. According to the article that we have read “Student fails not because they do not have intelligence to understand why they are studying, not because their lessons are too difficult for them, but because they do not know how to study or understand what study means. Therefore, if you have a good study technique on how you will understand your lessons you can have a high grades that you want to achieve. Second is in the state of financial needs. College tuition and fees are large expenses for students. A full-time college student might spend thousands of each semester depending on the course of each student. Subjects for the study were one hundred and thirty-five (135) students and fifty (50) teachers randomly drawn from five secondary schools in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State. Questionnaire was used to collect relevant data for the study. Percentages and chi-square were used to analyse the research questions. Responses of teachers showed that teachers’ qualification and students’ environment do not influence students’ poor performance but teachers’ methods of teaching influence poor academic performance. Students’ response on the other hand showed that while teachers’ qualification and students’ environment influence students’ poor performance, teachers’ method of teaching and learning materials do not. The implications of these findings for secondary school guidance counselors interested in counseling adolescents for good academic performance were discussed.…

    This study entitled “Instructional Competencies of the Teaching Force: Their Relationship to the Students’ Academic Performance” sought to study whether there exists a relationship between instructional competencies and the academic performance of the students. The researchers used the Descriptive-Correlation research design in this study. Instructional competencies, as a dependent variable was analyzed by coming up with the concrete sub-variables (i.e. Mastery of the Subject Matter, Teaching Skills, Classroom Management and Evaluation Skills). The main respondents of the study are the first year to fourth year students of Don Bosco College High School Department in the School Year 2011-2012. In order to derive the level of competencies of the teaching force, a survey was conducted measuring the perception on the level of competencies the teachers demonstrate. On the other hand, the academic performance of the students was based from the grades attained from the English, Science and Technology, and Mathematics grades from the first to second quarter of the school year 2011-2012. The result of the survey showed that the students perceive their English, Science and Technology and Mathematics teachers “Often” manifest the competence in teaching. The level of the respondents’ academic performance is found to be on the average level as indicated in their obtained grades in the corresponding subjects English, Science and Technology and Mathematics, which is equivalent to 80-84. Overall, all of the subjects concerned have significant correlation whether at 0.01 or 0.05 level and the correlations made were interpreted as negligible…

    This study was conducted to the selected first year college students who belong in a broken family at Olivarez College. The researchers chose 30 respondents to be utilized for this study. The researchers focused their inquiry to get more comprehensive and accurate information about their academic performance of the selected first year college students in Olivarez College, Parañaque City. 1. The following were the summary of the profile of the respondents 1.1 The studies showed that majority of the respondents were sixteeners with ten respondents or 33.3%. Nine respondents (30%) were 17 years old. Five respondents (16.67%) were 19 years old. Then three respondents were fifteeners. 1.2 The study showed that there is an equal number of male and female respondents. Each gender is represented by 15 respondents. 1.3 The study showed that 22 or 73.33% of the total respondents belong to to the families with monthly income between 15,000-20,000: followed by three respondents with 10,000-15,000 monthly income. Lastly, only 2 respondents (6.67%) have assured that their family income was between 5,000-10,000. 2. The following were the summary of the performance of students who belong to broken family during the first semester. 2.1 The study shows that majority of the students had grades between 77-79% with 8 respondents (26.67%). Then seven respondents (23.335) followed with grades of 7576%), third 6 respondents (20%) posted grades between 83-85%. Two respondents each got grades between 80-82% and 86-88%, respectively.
