The zygote divides multiple times by mitosis in order to produce an embryo. The embryo then differentiates to become a plumule, radicle, and/ or one or two cotyledons, which is attached to the wall of the embryo sac by a suspensor. Endosperm tissue is produced by the primary endosperm nucleus dividing multiple times by mitosis. This endosperm stores food for later use by the seed in some cases. It may gradually disappear as the cotyledons develop in others. The embryo sac expands to support growth, and the nucellus is crushed out of existence, which in return give nutrients to the embryo and endosperm. The integuments that surround the embryo sac become a tough, protective seed coat called testa. The micropyle is not removed to continue the intake of oxygen and water at germination. The water content of the seed decreases to prepare the seed for dormancy. The wall of the ovary becomes the pericarp, which is the fruit wall with the entire ovary now being fruit. The fruit protects the seeds and aid in…

Picking it up from the counter, the weight of this globular object seems significantly heavier than it looks, like a mini bowling ball. Despite the volume, it feels that the weight is not solid which is proven by the hollow sound the fruit makes when tapped, like patting a child on the head. The delineated lines feel like webbing and give the fruit a rough feel, but it’s not an uncomfortable roughness. The experience is somewhere in between a prickly cactus and a furry peach.…

When it is cut horizontally, the little pit where the seeds are kept is in the shape of a star and feels like thin cardboard. There were five seeds, all dark brown and shaped like a raindrop. The flesh was softer on its own without the protection of the skin and almost mushy. When I looked even closer, it seemed that the flesh of the apple was made up of tiny crystals that glistened in the light because of the juice and its cream coloring. The inside was even colder since it was wet. The sweet smell of the apple grew stronger and I finally gave in and took a…

The classification of plants is the understanding of the relationships and similarities between plants. It is important to identify unknown species, to group or assign names to organisms and to provide common references for those already identified (Bergman, Carol & Senn, 1988). The apple tree belongs to the Plantae kingdom meaning it is a plant (Bingaman, 1999) and the Tracheophyta subkingdom or phylum, indicates that over the years it “developed an interior plumping system and rigid supporting tissues that allowed them to grow much bigger” (“Phylum tracheophyta”, 1996). All these plants that have conducting tubes are vascular. Apple trees are in the Magnoliopsida class, meaning they are flowering plants (Mishra, 2010), and are in the Rosales order, so their flowers “are bisexual, usually have four or five petals and are flat or cup-shaped with fleshy fruits” (Durham, 2012). They are members of the rose family also known as Rosaceae family (“Rosaceae”, 2011), and of the genus Malus (Bingaman, 1999). Giving the apple tree the scientific name Malus domestica (Girard, 1999). Originating in Asia, there are approximately seven thousand-five hundred varieties of apples known around the world (Smith, 1999), but the most popular are based on how many boxes are produced each year, these include red delicious, golden delicious, granny smith, Rome, Fuji, Macintosh, Gala, Jonathan, Idared and Empire apples (Girard, 1999).…
