Activity 3.1: Positive and Negative Attitudes towards Non-verbal Communication
Non-verbal Communication:
Non-verbal Communication is the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless messages. Therefore, language is not the only source of communication, there are other means also. Non-verbal Communication can be communicated through many ways; gestures and touch, by body language or posture, by facial expression and eye contact. It can also be communicated through object communication such as clothing, hairstyles or even architecture and symbols. Speech can also contain nonverbal elements known as paralanguage; including voice quality, emotion and speaking style, as well as prosodic features such as rhythm, intonation and stress. Likewise, written texts have nonverbal elements such as handwriting style, spatial arrangement of words, or the use of emoticons.
However, not all people interpret non-verbal communication in the same way. The receiver may have some impediments to receiving the correct message; for example, how the person classifies individuals in his/her community, or what we call stereo-typing. This could lead to poor reception and interpretation of the message.
When you see someone looking in your eyes while you are talking, maybe you will think that he is listening carefully to you, on the other hand someone will think that he is waiting for any mistake and you will feel uncomfortable. The reaction depends on the nature of the people. Some people are positive by nature and some are the opposite.
