Die liebe Farbe Analysis
Schubert’s completly revolutionized the idea of beautiful lyrisim using his true emotional connections and dedication to the poetry he used in his songs. In his song cycle Die Shone Mullin, Schubert uses classical techniques with a romantic flare to set the text in a meaningful fashion. In the sixteenth song of the set, Die liebe Farbe, Schubert uses these techniques and through a purposeful and precise setting of the text, he is able to make the text dense by giving it multi-dimentions. The F# is easily picked out at all times, and seems to represent the color green itself and how it constantly is hammering away at his sanity through it’s relentlessness. Meanwhile the left hand plays a descant type of countermelody using beautiful passing tones, neighboring tones, and arpeggiations to create a rich harmony with the other parts. This counter melody mainly harmonizes in thirds with the voice part, causing it to have a conflict with the F# at times. This can be seen in bar seven on the sustained E natural in the base and in the following bar on the G natural. One can become reliant on the F# especially when it harmonizes well, therefore these dissonance’s between notes and the F# become even more jarring and offputting, adding more color to the text. The passing tones in the voice line add a similar color, which can be seen and the end of bar twelve. Schubert was one of the first composer’s of lieder to give the accompaniment just as much importance as the voice. In this piece each part has a different role in telling the story of the text. The voice line is the Miller’s own thoughts and feelings on his situation, the right hand is what the situation is desplayed as to the Miller, and the left hand gives a tone of the situation as a whole and the actuality of the dispair not just from the Miller’s
