13 December 2012 Have you ever debated over whether it is a good or bad thing to go to a same-sex school? After meeting with Ms. Vilgante, principal, Mrs. Witherspoon and Mrs. Convertino, guidance counselors they help answer this question. These people state the pros and cons of going to a same-sex school. A pro is students find it easier to focus and learn in this environment, a con is not being able to interact with the opposite gender. There are many thoughts in this topic and many opinions on this kind of education, but they all seem to be very similar. Mrs. Vilgante says, “I feel girls flourish and can be themselves.” When a student goes to a same-sex school they can truly open up and can really be themselves. Going to a same-sex school makes you feel more comfortable because the students won’t judge you and are usually a lot like one another. When students wake up in the morning, they don’t have to worry about people making fun of how they look that day. No one really cares what they look like. They just put their hair up in a messy bun and slip a headband on. This is a signature Academy of the Holy Names bun because everyone wears it. No one puts on a bunch of makeup to impress people. Another advantage of single-sex education is that there aren’t distractions like you get in a public co-education school. Making close bonds with people in your school is very likely and you get to see your best friends all day. All of this is personal opinions but most of it is from listening to what the teachers had to say.
There are not many disadvantages to single-sex education. But there are a few; one is that you don’t get the experience of being in a classroom with boys and girls. This can bring a different environment to the classroom, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad.
