In the beginning of the semester our Team Leadership class was presented with the task to help make an organization’s team more effective. We had the freedom to choose who our desired organization could be and to observe them. After much thought and consideration, we chose to observe the Association of Information Technology Professionals, more commonly known as AITP. Our goal for this semester was to observe the AITP group and evaluate our findings to help them become more effective as a team. We would present our findings in a workshop setting, which would in turn, help them see areas where they can improve on.…

Howard had a stroke of luck in the form of Donald Peterson, a long-time Acme employee who was highly respected and was looking for one final, challenging project before he retired. Peterson had served in just about every possible line and staff position at workers faced on both the brains and the brawn sides of the business, Howard was pleased when Peterson agreed to serve as leader. There were three functional groups: operations, made up primarily of hourly workers who operated and maintained the extracting equipment; the below ground group, consisting of engineers, geologists and geophysicists who determined where and how to drill; and the above ground group of engineers in charge of cursory refinement and transportation of the minerals. Howard and Peterson declined the first step was to get these different groups talking to one another and sharing ideas, They instituted a monthly problem chat: an optional meeting to which all employees were invited to discuss unresovled problems. At the first meeting, Howard and Peterson were the only two people to show up. However, people gradually began to attend the meetings, and after about six months they had become lively problem-sovling discussions the led to many improvements.…

When preparing to lead a team there is a lot to consider, ranging from your team members to policy and procedures. All teams are made of individuals, they are all unique in terms of their knowledge, skills and attitudes and the way they behave in different situations. As a leader, your role is to engage the collective energy of the group, but at the same time giving individuals in that team the focus and attention they need. Providing required resources and a safe environment at all times. Leading involves management and leadership, getting things done through or by other people. This is often where managers make their first mistake. ‘It’s quicker to do it myself’ is sometimes said or ‘The only way to make sure something is done correctly is to do it myself’. This is not what management is about. To be a good manager you have to set your team goals and objectives. Monitoring their progress but do not micro manage them. This will let your team learn through experience and grow confidence and a sense of responsibility. Supporting them where applicable by providing them advice, training and resources. This will help you train them up to be future mangers and free up time so you can focus on tasks that might require your personal attention.…

Given that teams are likely to contain relatively small numbers of people the team leaders span of control is quite small. The team leader role is distinct from that of the first line manager in its tendency to focus on the shorter term, on the day to day performance of the team and its members. This means a responsibility for allocating tasks between team members, for ensuring that individuals are supported in the performance of their job role, and that output conforms to the requirements of the organisation and its customers. Communication between the team and its managers is a significant part of the team leader’s role.…
