PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

CHAPTER 9: DEVELOPING LAYOUT STRATEGIES The objective of office layout strategy is to develop a cost-effective layout that meets a firm’s competitive needs. There are seven types of layout: 1. Office layout – positions of workers and their equipments to provide movement of information. 2. Retail layout – allocates shelf space and responds to customer behavior 3. Warehouse layout – addresses trade-offs between space and material handling 4. Fixed-position layout – addresses the layout requirements of large projects 5. Process-oriented layout – deals with low-volume, high-variety production 6. Work-cell layout – arranges machinery and equipment to focus on production of single or group related products 7. Product-oriented layout – seeks the best personnel and machine utilization in continuous production Office layout is the grouping of workers, their equipment and spaces to provide for comfort, safety and movement of information. The main distinction of office layouts is the importance placed on the flow of information. Managers examine both electronic and conventional communication patterns, separation needs and other conditions affecting employee effectiveness. A useful tool is the relationship chart. Retail layout is an approach that addresses flow, allocates space and responds to customer behavior. The main objective of retail layout is to maximize profitability per square foot of floor space. Warehouse layout is a design that attempts to minimize total cost by addressing trade-offs between space and material handling.     Upon our current situation, size is one of the crucial parts to be improved with our warehouse. 80,000-square-foot and low ceilings are apparently insufficient for efficient 53-foot trailers to work and cannot provide enough space for docks so that they have to load and unload materials much timely and is not convenient for customers picking up their freights. Compared with popular warehouse layouts, the six-story layout is less efficient because it uses elevators and chutes conveying items between each floor and adds complexity to the overall process. The old building has not done yet, but it can barely keep good condition for work. The weak floors cannot burden the heavy equipments like fork lifters and the elevators are always out of work which exacerbates the inefficiency. Besides, with the low-tech equipments we have, warehouse cannot stock various kinds of items. For instance, if we have a modern-design warehouse system, we will have more abilities to store items which are fragile, flammable, short-shelf-life or easy to cracked. Each cell at Cutco has its own job to do for the team before it can reach the next work station.     One of the key roles of the external auditor is to protect the interest of the public. To achieve this, it is important for the public to trust and have confidence in the work of an auditor. It is crucial that auditors appear independent to the public in both fact and appearance.
