Question 1
Why is DAV using Statistical Process Control (SPC)? What are the challenges in applying SPC to a service industry compared with manufacturing?

Ms Kluck was advocating the SPC as a means of improving the efficiency and accuracy of the Customer Service operations. Reducing errors increases the productivity, lowers the costs to the company. Customers benefit from an improved customer service aspect and over time will lead to higher revenues. Any time costs can be reduced and revenues can be influenced higher, is a good capitalist practice. The challenges with applying SPC to the service industry as compared to the manufacturing industry are in manufacturing there are processes that are repeated. Measuring these processes is inherently easier because they are more common. The service industry is not replete with processes throughout. There are some areas within the service that SPC lends itself as an analytical tool, such as back office operations. Service industry interaction is many time customer facing and interactions with customers are as varied as there are customers.

Question 2
How large should each sample size be for the experiment Schoss and Kluck describe on page 7 of the case?

Question 3
The first 12 weeks of the data in aExhibit 4 represent the diagnostic period for the Policy Extension Group. What are the 3 sigma control limit for the process? In which of the subsequent weeks is the process out of control (if any)?

The enzyme peroxidase has been shown to break down H2O2. Enzymes are known to increase the rate at which a chemical reaction occurs. We looked at factors that affected the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide. These effects are the different temperatures and pH levels the enzymes were placed in. We found that the optimum, or best condition, temperature for the enzymes tested was about 22 degrees Celsius. The optimum pH level for the enzyme was 7.…

Planning customer service can also be motivational for employees as it can help them improve their level of service given to their external customers. By planning customer service standards, it sets a benchmark for employees to work against and allows them to measure if they have achieved this through set targets either per individual or for the store as a whole.…

Deutsche Allgemeinversicherung (DAV) is one of the world's largest insurance companies. In 1996, 51% of DAV's business was in Germany (in which 60% was in retail insurance). Managers of other firms say DAV's strengths lie in both 'sound, traditional insurance management' (most likely the core insurance product offering) and 'outstanding customer services' (most likely the human contract element in the insurance product). The insurance company has cutting-edge technology. DAV seeks to lower its defects' internal costs and external costs by increasing its appraisal and preventation costs.…

The objective of a process control system is to provide a statistical signal when assignable causes of variation are present “ if you can’t describe and measure it the you can’t control or improve it.” SPC a process used to monitor standards by taking measurements and corrective action as a product or service is being produced. Control chart a graphical presentation of process data over time. A process is said to be orperating in SC when only source of variation is common(natural) causes. The process must first be brought in statistical control by dectecting and elimination special(assignable) causes of variation. The objective of Process Control Sysytem is to provide a statistical signal when assignable causes of variation are present. Natural variation variability that affects every production process to some degree and is to be expected also known as common cause. Control charts for the mean x or x-bar and the range R are used to monitor processes that have variables (continuous dimensions). X-chart tells us whether changes have occurred in the central tendency(the mean) of a process. The R-chart values indicate that a gain or loss in dispersion has occurred. The theoretical foundation for x-charts is the central limit theorem which states that regardless of the distribution of the population of all parts or services, the distribution of x’s tends to follow a normal curve as the number of samples increases. 95.45 % +/- 2 std dev. 99.73% +/- 3 std dev. Attributes are typically classified as defective or nondefective. 2 attribute charts p-chart measure the percent defective in a sample and c-chart count the number of defects in a sample. Acceptance sampling method of measuring random samples of lots or batches of products against predetermined standards.…

¨Statistical process control (SPC) involves using statistical techniques to measure and analyze the variation in processes. Most often used for manufacturing processes, the intent of SPC is to monitor product quality and maintain processes to fixed targets. Statistical quality control refers to using statistical techniques for measuring and improving the quality of processes and includes SPC in addition to other techniques, such as sampling plans, experimental design, variation reduction, process capability analysis, and process improvement plans.¨(reliability.sandia.gov, Statistical Process Control)…
