Deep Sea Adventure I remember last year one warm, stormy grey afternoon, when I visited the Georgia Aquarium. I was with my immediate family and my little brother’s friend. The drive to get there was very tedious and time consuming due to all the traffic and people walking around. While driving through the streets, we saw many people dressed up for the comic convention. There were super heroes like spider-man dressed in very intricate blue and red, and also star fighters for Star Wars in their all white and black uniforms with the fake replica guns. By the time we finally got somewhat close to the Georgia Aquarium, my brother and his friend had been so bothered with the heat that had snaked its way through the car that they finally got out of the car and walked. This left my remaining family and I to find a parking space. By the time we found a parking space thirty minutes had already passed, and we were all happy to stretch our legs and take in the warm, humid air. When we got to the front doors of the aquarium, which were painted blue and green with dolphins on the front, a blast of cool air hit us from the top, cooling us off. We walked through the heavily packed gift shop with its stand of bags, t-shirts and collectibles. When we got into the main aquarium, it was so packed with people on their way to 4 distinctive places to visit. We hiked our way up the stairs to first go visit the beluga whales and whale sharks.

As we walked in, we saw open pools with coral reefs, which were colored blue, and pink with a slimy feel when your fingers slide across them. Soon we arrived to a tunnel, which took us under the tank where we had underwater views of the fish. Above us were fish in their natural environment, swimming around and looking at the foreigners who had come to visit. The water was so blue, and fish swam around apparently happily. There was a whale, which approached the

I went to the Art Museum of South Texas to take a look at the artwork they had on display there. I found that they had an exhibit called Liquid Light and it included black and white photographs of the sea and its inhabitants. In this exhibit there were works from 10 different photographers and while I loved and developed an appreciation for many of the photographs on display the one that caught my eye was the “Diving Humpback whale” by Wayne Levin (born 1945). This paper will focus on why Wayne Levin takes photographs of the underwater world and why the “Diving Humpback Whale” photograph was my favorite.…

With my past disappointments, I was not greedy. I was simply hoping for the opportunity to get in the water and photograph a single whale shark. Thankfully, we were blessed with sunny skies, flat seas, warm crystal clear water, and HUNDREDS of whale sharks. These gentle giants seemed oblivious to the snorkelers sharing the water with them. They ignored us and simply swam around at the surface slowly feeding on the bonito eggs. Pg 27…

Every single scene in the documentary “The Cove” is overwhelming. One after the other the facts about the dolphin slaughter add up to a truth which is difficult to accept. A wide range of human arrogance, cruelty, and irresponsibility flourishes in this beautiful, almost magic National Park in Japan. Throughout the film, I felt angry, sad, feeling sorry for the helpless dolphins until the scene where the director shows the actual killing taking place. The scenes were so disturbing: the water colored bright red from the dolphin’s blood, the dolphins, dying slowly and painfully, the fishermen walking over them. I wanted to run out, to close my eyes. However, at this moment I felt sorry, but this time for myself. How hypocritical am I to feel disturbed by the cruelty of the fishermen, when tonight I am going to sit down on the table and enjoy a beef steak as if everything was alright. Is not the cow…

It had a red sanded beach, and we got to see the Sealions, a Galapagos Hawk, and the Marine Iguanas, which are the only species that swim underwater to eat the algae off of rocks. The next day, we went to another island and saw the Blue Footed Boobys and Frigate birds. The Boobys were sky pointing and doing their mating dance around their nests, and the Frigates were puffing up their red bellies to the females. When I went back to the ship, I worked on my questions that I had gotten from the naturalists in my room. Later on in the trip, I turned in my questions and became a junior naturalist.…

And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came.” – John F. Kennedy. This quote perfectly sums up human’s relationship with the ocean. The amount of marine life on earth far exceeds that of the land, because 95% of habitable space on this planet is in the ocean (“Blue Planet”). The ocean is teeming with life, most of which we have not met. In the ocean however, there are two species of animals that keep all life on the planet flourishing. Coral and cetaceans. The documentary Blue Planet continues, stating, “ Coral is essential to life in the ocean. Organisms live inside it, use it for shelter, use it for food and use it for cleanliness. No creature could survive in the reefs without coral.” Secondly, a remarkably important species is the cetacean species. This family is made up of whales, dolphins and porpoises, of which the whale is paramount. Whales have the biggest animal to ever live, the blue whale (Blue Planet). Its heart is as big as a car, its tail is as big as an airplane, it has blood vessels so wide you could swim through them, and it is bigger than any dinosaur. Of the two species vital to the ocean, the whale is the most critical to save. Our vast and plentiful oceans depend on coral, but even coral depends on the…

We jumped back in the car and hit the road. There wasn’t much to see heading into California. It is very similar to Vegas, in that, they are both lush with green grass and towering palm trees. But once we hit Laguna Beach, it was like a whole new world. It was a small town filled with very friendly people. Shiny, luxurious cars lined the streets, at least every third one being a convertible. People filled the beaches and streets, taking in the sunshine, some walking dogs, others bordered by what looked like family or friends. When we pulled up to our hotel, a quaint little Inn; spitting distance from the beach, we were pleasantly surprised. A two level spread of rooms surrounding a swimming pool that was accompanied by a hot sauna made out of an actual wine barrel. The nightly rate wasn’t much, the most we could afford for the planned two nights booked in a paradise called Laguna, so we had prepared for less. We checked in and walked straight to the beaches. Words cannot describe the sights of these beaches. The tide was low and we were able to walk right onto the coral reefs and admire the collected puddles of water and sea life. Beautiful pinkish, orange starfish and prickly, purple sea urchins lined the walls while small fish and hermit crabs explored the territory. The sky was the bluest blue and the sun beamed down on our skin, toasting us the perfect bronze, without a…

It has been 10 years now and that encounter is still vivid in my memory. Looking over the railing of the pier, I see the turquoise water with small waves rippling across the surface. Scanning the pier, I quickly checked to make sure that no one is watching me and jump into the calm blue waters that lay below. Once submerged, I open my eyes and notice the small pearl-like bubbles rising and rays of sunlight streaming into the water around me. The sensation of breathing underwater remains unnerving to this day. Underneath the water lays a large expanse of coral with such an amazing array of bright and vibrant colors that it looks to have been painted; this is my destination today. Approaching the reef, I notice an assortment of lively colored fish, darting through the waters and swimming amongst the coral. For hours, I lingered, silently observing the coral reef community living together in balance and harmony. I did not fully appreciated that night so many years ago, but the ability to breathe underwater provided me with an escape from the madness in the world…

“Over here!” My sister said.. I went up to the balcony, but as soon as I got there, I was terrified one again. I was absolutely terrified of being over or above anything. Something that was even more scarier, was that we were above a fish tank, so we could easily fall. Luckily, there were handles. After we got off, our trip was sadly ending. At the end, there was a souvenir shop. My sister got a snow globe with two striped fishes swimming around, and I got a key chain of a dolphin with blue, green, and purple colored over it. That was a really fun trip, one of the funnest trips I had ever…

After a year of living in our small two bedroom house we decided that we needed to add another bedroom. We had made all the decisions of what we wanted it to look like such as the size of the room, the size of the closet and what we what kind of mood the atmosphere would give us. I wanted the room to feel welcoming, warm and cozy, like sitting next to a warm fireplace on a cold snowy night. I wanted to call this room my quiet space where I can relax, read, and be big enough to hold all of our belongings. I wanted a room to hide away from the screaming children, which was my main goal.…

There was so much to do so much to see. We saw the very tall sign. The bright yellow sign had a beach ball in the center of it with the sun surrounding it. On the right side it said Pier and on the left it said Park. the letters were blue with yellow-orange surrounding it. The sidewalks were not like regular sidewalks. They had little sea creatures on it. Some of them were seahorses and rainbow fish. As we walked around Pier Park we saw many fancy restaurants. Some restaurants were just fast food places like five guys. There were some water ice and frozen yogurt places. We spent spent some of the day walking around and next was…

Italy, a gorgeous country shaped like a boot, is one of the most beautiful places one can visit. I recently vacationed in Italy, and never gave my eyes the chance to take a break from the beautiful scenery: from the ongoing gorgeous landscape to the remarkable architecture. My family and I really enjoyed our little time in Italy, between visiting our loud and obnoxious extended family to tasting and smelling amazing Italian cuisine. Vacationing in a different country is a remarkable experience, so many different things to see and experience, different foods to taste and smell, and new a language to envelop.…

The American dream is one of freedom and equality. This is supposed to be branded in the heart of every United States citizen, however, when it comes to homosexuals this dream is demolished. Homosexuals should be able to legally show their love for each other by having a marriage license. The prohibition of gay marriage is wrong because it is a prominent form of discrimination. Some people may argue that they don’t want their tax dollars being used for something they consider to be “wrong”, however, this is not the case. Marriage should be something that is celebrated for both heterosexual and homosexual couples.…

Several years ago I made a trip to Cape Town South Africa, and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life. The excitement of the unknown grew with each passing hour spent in the air, high above the earth. Though my sons and I had a planned five day excursion, I still couldn’t stop wondering what might still lie ahead. Would it be something about this new culture I was about to experience; or would it be something more, something about me?…
