I lived with my grandparents since my mom worked in another city. There were few uncles, aunties and some cousins I loved that house because it provided shelter and rest just like a sanctuary. This house was unforgettable because of its composition, its memories and the firm foundation it establish for my life.

At first, the house stood on the corner of the street filled with flowers as a garden and smelled of candy. An old brick wall house built up for several decades. Located about 200 meters away from the Church, and 150 meters far from the public Library, which served of references. There was a lake at the end of the street, and the sunset directly behind it created a spectacular visual event. The place was quit and people only heard the sound of the bird. The house had two stairs with nine bedrooms and three bathroom. At the top floor, five bedrooms and two bathrooms. One kitchen, two storage rooms, a big living room at the bottom floor, four bedrooms, and one bathroom. The balcony, a peaceful area to study just like at the library. This house stood in the country which is Democratic Rep. of Congo.

Also, the house was full of memories, where family enjoyed company of each other. Just to enter the house means to leave all problem that happened all along the day behind. At this house, girls like boys prepared food, swept the land, or even clean their room and do the dishes without a thought of gender. When the time came to get up for school, we rushed to the bathroom so that the last person to get in was supposed to clean up. Sometimes, we wake up at night around 11pm to cook, and the youngest ones helped the older, but ended up deprived of food. The smell of spicy food comes from the kitchen every night, and that food tasted of

I moved into my home when I was about 4. They house we used to live in was going to be too small once me and my sister, Mira, got older. I was very sad that we were leaving the house I had lived in my whole life. I had many fond memories for it, such as my dad building a playing structure for me and my sister. I remember thinking that I had a say in which house we were going to buy, and I thought that I had a part in making such an important decision, which I know now is preposterous, but I felt proud to be making choices. I remember missing my old house, with the play house that my dad made, and the stairs up to my bedroom, which seemed so tall. This new house had no stairs. I remember meeting our new neighbors, Manny, who really like vintage pinball machines…

In this passage, Jamaica Kincaid articulates upon how foreign power vastly altered the lives of Antiguans, by affirming that they have been ripped away from their families and homeland. Kincaid uses word choice which exhibits her frustration toward the Antiguans, who cheers at “some frumpy, wrinkled-up person passing by in a carriage waving at the crowd.” Kincaid juxtaposes Antiguans to orphans to further relate her feelings about the people of Antigua. To create a harsh tone consisting tragedy and misery, Kincaid uses heavy words and juxtaposition, as well as syntax. Through her word choice and literary devices Kincaid offers the readers insight on her feelings toward the Antiguan society.…

Most if not all of my memories came from her house. We had many memories in that house and I loved every single one, including the dreadful ones. I remember aimlessly wandering late at night through the itchy, insect filled trail behind her house, where we lay on the dewy grass for hours staring at the stars. I remember ignorant arguments we had over things such as “which cup of coffee is mine?”, “or you forgot to bring it again?”, but within ten minutes, we would forgive each other and be rejoicing again. The memories that brought me the most joy were the most mischievous ones. I…
