Monterrey

Monterrey is a great city, full of beautiful people and one of the most awe-inspiring cities, because of its buildings and its hardworking people. Only by walking on Monterrey’s streets will you only be able to understand their importance and let work their magic on you. The first or second thing you should do when visiting Monterrey is to eat cabrito and carne asada, not until you eat cabrito and carne asada can’t you really say you visited Monterrey. And if love flea markets you must visit “El mercadito” on Sundays on Barrio Antiguo, you will love even though it’s bustling. Rarely will you see such soaring buildings that are example of the most exquisite architecture. When visiting México the first thing you’ll see is “El cerro de la silla”, you can’t just ignore it because it’s in your face and it’s such an amazing piece of art made by nature. Never before will you see anything so breathtakingly beautiful before like “Paseo Santa Lucía”. Sometimes it’s full of haphazard people but in the end this people are friendly and helpful. Only after you have visited Monterrey will you begin to understand its beautifulness.

During my visit to Plaza Olvera, I discovered much information that before, I never really bothered to pay attention to. La Placita Olvera a colorful Mexican marketplace who attracts millions of visitors. Besides its restaurants and crafts shops, Plaza Olvera also is famous for hosting traditional events like the blessing of the Animals, Cinco de Mayo, Fiestas Patrias, Dia de Los Muertos, and Las Posadas. On my visit to the Placita Olvera I also discovered Avila Adobe, this house was built in 1818 by Francisco Jose Avila. Francisco Avila was a Californio and wealthy cattle rancher. The Avila Adobe interior depicts the California lifestyle of the 1840s. Dark wood tables, four-poster beds, candelabras and elaborate carpets. Moving forward to…

In 1997, after I graduated from the University of Baja California, in Tijuana, Mexico, and started my first job, I decided to take my first trip with my best friends. We were undecided on which city we were going to visit. After a little research we found the city of Guanajuato. We picked this city because it has a lot of places to visit and is a colonial city. However, the thing that lead me decide is that this city remind me of the story of Romeo and Juliet. My husband is originally from Mexico City and I come from small rural areas in Michigan. We had a farm with sheep, pigs, chickens, horses, dogs, cats, and the list goes on. We eventually moved to a fruit farm and grew apples, pears, and peaches. I really had never gone to any big cities except when we would go to Kalamazoo to shop for school clothes at the beginning of the school year. It seems funny to say this now but that really was a treat for us kids while growing up. Our small towns also didn’t have a McDonalds but it did have a small ice cream shop that we would go visit if our team won its softball game on the weekend. Mexico City was an eye opener. I visited the subway for the first time in my life. I saw homeless people sitting on the sidewalks in the zocalo (center of town) with their hands out. Transportation was a bus, taxi (usually a Volkswagen bug), or trolley car, that you usually had to walk a few blocks to get to before you could get to the subway. It could take hours to get to work in the morning and hours to get back home. Family members would leave at 8:00 a.m. and not return until 8:00 p.m., some even later. I was accustomed to leaving at 6:45 a.m. and returning at 3:15…

New York City is known as a center of art, culture, fashion and finance with iconic sites such as Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, and The Empire State Building. There are certain aspects which are easily identified with New York City such as skyscrapers, rap, the subway, and Broadway. However, in my mind, there is one aspect of New York City which I feel represents the city as a whole. One place that can be found in each neighborhood with different ambiences and different people. Diners are delightful environments and food joints serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Diners show the traits which make New York City so enjoyable for me.…
