Korea lies in the eastern part of Asia. This peninsula is divided into two countries: North Korea and South Korea. Although there is a division of landscape, government, and culture, the bulk of people in Korea consider themselves a part of the Korean nation. Regardless of that, the countries do have their differences. The entire peninsula is cut off from Northeast China by rugged mountains and sizable rivers (Rowntree 365). The north suffers from heavy deforestation, however it has more natural resources. The south has made extensive reforestation efforts post WWII and so they have more greenery. In terms of culture, there are more intense differences. In the South, k-pop and Korean drams have gone global. The culture has appealed to people worldwide. Meanwhile, North Korea remains somewhat in isolation. What’s more, North Koreans attempt to flee into Northeast China, quite often. Yet no one flees South Korea. This shows that there are different cultures and levels of comfort in each…

North Korea has a communist, state-run, one-man dictatorship. However, North korea has gone through many steps to get where they are today. In 668 A.d., Koreans were united by the Silla Dynasty. This dynasty united three kingdoms of Korea which included Silla, Paekhe, and Koruryo. After the unification, Korea obtained a more organized bureaucratic model which was in accord with China. This system divided the Korean peninsula into 9 different provinces. The system also included systems of ministries and bureaus. Later, in 1910, Japan colonized Korea. It is said that during this colonization, the Korean people suffered greatly. During this time period, Korea began to modernize and Pyongyang became the capital (center of attraction) of Korea. 35 years later, in 1945, the Cold War and 38th parallel divided the Korean people into North and South Korea. While the North had a more dictatorship structure, the South strived for a democratic system, which clashed.…

The book I chose for this book review assignment is titled Korea Old and New: A History by author Carter J. Eckert along with other contributing authors Ki-baik Lee, Young Ick Lew, Michael Robinson and Edward W. Wagner. The book is published at Korea Institute, Harvard University in 1990. The book consists of 418 pages and it is more of a survey of Korean history and reference type of book, rather than selected readings on modern Korean politics. I chose this book because it is a complete survey of Korean history from the ancient Choson period up to the economic boom of the 1990's, a span of over 2000 years. Each chapter covers a different period, but they all share the same organization of describing the social, cultural, political, philosophical and scholarly aspects of the period in respective subsections. This made it easier to later refer to previous chapters and compare different periods in order to learn the comprehensive history of Korea.…

At first Japan sent troops to Seoul so that it could oversee the country they had won. When a Japanese official was assassinated in 1909, Japan thought it would be better to make Korea a part of Japan so that it could have more control of the country. Japan would then have control of Korea for 35 years. Korea was controlled from afar from Tokyo. The Japanese people who lived in Korea did not like Koreans and treated them very harshly. While most Koreans did not like the invasion of Japan, it did have a positive outcome. Japan created roads, railroads, ports and dams while they were in control of Korea. At the same time, the Koreans were used as cheap labor. Most of the money that was made was sent back to Japan. Koreans were not treated humanely while in Japanese control (Isserman).…

Seoul had been a key location of exported-oriented industries in Korea, with its reliance on the manufacturing sector which later declined significantly due to rise in wages and strengthened unions accelerated its deindustrialization process of the Seoul economy in the late 1980’s with the flows of migrant workers from developing Asian countries, such as China, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Thailand and Pakistan into Seoul. Many local companies relocated their factories overseas where cheaper, docile labors were available. This surge of Seoul-based multinational corporations' foreign investment has been the core of the globalization of the Korean economy from its virtual location to its new actual location of economic growth.…
