Describing Eileen Pollack's Journey Through Life
In my opinion, one word to describe Eileen Pollack’s journey through life is resiliency. Honestly, I wasn’t looking forward to attending the lecture at first because I assumed she was going to bash on males and promote feminism for an hour. I also believed that I would be the only guy there. Nonetheless, my assumption was completely wrong, and I was immature to even think that for a minute. Within the first moments of listening to her talk, I was moved and inspired. She grew up in New York in the 1970’s, attended school where there wasn’t advanced science and math at the middle school level. However, boys her age were allowed to skip ahead so they could get exposed to science and math. Pollack had an interest in pursuing math and science, but her principle notified her mother that she would be wasting a seat because girls don’t go into science and math and that it would ruin her social life; she wouldn’t have any girls to interact with because she’d be like the boys. As a male, I never even thought of these modern issues in society. I fully agreed with all of the statements she made. I strongly believe that there needs to be immediate change with the unfair treatment of women in education and the workplace. You’d think that by 2016 there would be gender and ethnic equality, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. I don’t think that I have ever thought that women shouldn’t be in science because I know an abundant amount of women at Oregon State that are much smarter and more knowledgeable than I am. Nonetheless, Eileen Pollack’s lecture has made me more aware of the underlying issues in gender inequality. Furthermore, it has motivated me to work harder to reach my maximum potential in
