Describe How Even When A Physical Change Has Occurred.
• The law of conservation of mass states that the total amount of mass remains constant in a confined space of any physical or chemical changes that may take place.

a. Comparing the weight of an object that has been separated into individual pieces to the weight of the same object as a whole.
b. Compare the weight of matter before and after it endures dissolving, freezing or melting.

• Objective 2 – Analyze evidence that would suggest a physical change has occurred.
a. Recognize the physical properties of matter (e.g., solid, liquid, gas).
b. Compare the changes in the materials that show a physical/chemical change has occurred.
c. Describe what the appearance of the material looks like before and after a physical/chemical change.

These are the materials needed for each of the groups and experiments:

Have the students fill a cup with 20 ml of water.
2. Weigh the cup with the 20 ml of water in it. Have the students record that weight (g)
3. Then weigh the container with the two teaspoons of salt in it. Have the students record that as well.
4. Then have the students predict what will happen to the weight of the water when the salt is added to it and have them record their predictions
5. Add the salt to the water and mix it with the spoon provided. Be sure not to lose any of the salt or water as the students are mixing.
6. Weigh the final mixture and have the students record their findings while asking them why the mass hasn’t changed
*The mass should not have changed because the mass is conserved*
• Experiment Four: In a chemical change, the mass is conserved

What you will need: Ziploc Bag filled with 20 ml of water Balance or Scale One Alka-Seltzer Tablet
Procedure:
1. Find the weight of the Alka-Seltzer tablet and the weight of the Ziploc bag containing the 20ml of water.
2. Once both masses are recorded, add the tablet to the water and quickly close the Ziploc
