Charles Bukowski, an American poet, novelist, and short story writer, once said “If something bad happens you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens you drink in order to celebrate; and if nothing happens you drink to make something happen.” Many people around the world struggle with alcoholism. They will find any reason just to slip a drink into their daily routines. Some people drink to forget the guilt and shame, some drink as a way of celebration, and others drink because of they are physically dependent on it. The addiction to alcohol is an illness and the people surrounding an alcoholic can be negatively impacted by their ways. The many consequences that come with the addiction can often lead negative outcomes such as death and crumbling relationships.…
“The chief reasons for starting to drink involve social and cultural factors, particularly the expectancies that form from watching other individuals enjoying themselves while drinking (Text, )”. Many young people start because they see their parents and friends doing it. Additionally, many ceremonies and celebrations involve the use of alcohol, showing others alcohol is acceptable and fun. Media also plays a role in a person’s decision to drink alcohol. Alcohol use is abundant in many television shows and movies. It is almost impossible to watch a television show without seeing a commercial promoting alcohol. Along with these reasons, others begin drinking because of psychological reasons such as, depression, stress, and anxiety. Many of the individuals who drink for these reasons can cause increased problems with their mental health. These people drink to change their mental state because alcohol can temporarily alleviate the feelings of depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, this can cause people to have much worse feelings of depression and anxiety. This can lead some people to drink more to get rid of the increased feelings, causing a vicious cycle of…
It is it is very difficult to understand the problem of addiction. We see that the sufferers have two sides to their character: the drinker \user and the non-drinker. Friends and relatives see and painfully experience, the duality of their addictive behaviour, as the Addict’s behaviour changes and as they are increasingly gripped by their addiction to their drug or activity. The relatives hear and believe the promises to quit or cut down only to have their hopes dashed when the drinking\using begins again or the individual once again loses control of their use.…

Alcoholism and the disease of addiction have been viewed in two strong yet completely different ends of the spectrum for as long as men and women have been losing control of how much and when they drink. One end of the spectrum is the immoralist point of view, which claims the “alcoholic as not having morals” (Gary, 1999). When describing alcoholics, they have also been known to call them “sinful” or “moral weaklings” (Gary, 1999). Throughout history, the alcoholic has been ridiculed, as described by Gary Stofle in the article “The Morality of Alcoholism”: “Society has ascribed to these views as evidenced by the fact that alcoholics have been jailed just for being alcoholics in the past. At worst, alcoholics have been killed or left to die because of society 's views and from a lack of knowledge concerning treatment of alcoholism as well. At best, alcoholics have been laughed at, scorned, pitied and/or run out of town” (1999). These views of the alcoholic have caused a great many to relapse, and even die, when all that was needed was a little understanding of the disease. The biggest problem with holding this view of addiction is that it can be potentially fatal for the alcoholic of…
Alcoholism is a very dangerous disorder that many people are suffering from. A lot of Americans don’t realize that alcoholism is a big deal, and they may not even know someone very close to them is an alcoholic. Some people may say alcoholism is a disease but addictions are not diseases. People use alcohol as a way to medicate and hide from uncomfortable feelings. Most of us have been led to believe that “ alcoholism is a genetic inheritance that some people are born with” (Burras pg.1 Para 1) Studies have been done and they have shown that this is not true. They have never seen a gene proving that alcoholism is biologically. Alcoholism is not a disease because…
Alcohol is a common and easily obtainable drug that has been socially accepted in many countries. Alcohol is a ‘depressant drug.’ It slows down the actions of the central nervous system and lowers heart and breathing rates, allowing many people to ‘relax.’ The drug doesn’t affect the body as much if it is taken in right amounts; however if the drug is abused, it can be very harmful. Even though many people are aware of the negative effects of alcohol, people still decide to drink as it helps them unwind and have a ‘good time.’…

Both depression and addiction go hand in hand. In this paper I am going to explain how both interact with each other. Addiction can lead to depression, while depression can lead to any form of addiction. Addiction is the quality or state of being addicted. It can also be defined as a compulsive need for and use of alcohol and drugs, both recreational and prescribed. Depression is a psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty thinking and concentrating, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, and low self-esteem. I’m going to show how it all can affect each other.…
Alcoholism and drug abuse has existed for as long as we can remember. For teenagers its something cool to do and numb whatever pains they have. For adults it’s a way to get away from everyday stress and avoid conflicts in life. To everyone it’s a way to feel free and as if they are in charge of the world by altering their moods, and ironically a way to actually feel good about themselves by absurdly doing something that makes them look like unpleasant people.…
Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are due to many interconnected factors, including genetics, how you were raised, your social environment, and your emotional health. Some racial groups, such as American Indians and Native Alaskans, are more at risk than others of developing alcohol addiction. People who have a family history of alcoholism or who associate closely with heavy drinkers are more likely to develop drinking problems. Finally, those who suffer from a mental health problem such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder are also particularly at risk, because alcohol may be used to self-medicate.…
