Depersonalization Disorder

I’ve been using cannabis since the final week of my 13th year. I was actually the last of my inner circle to try it. One day two of my best (only) friends came into school acting goofier than usual. I asked them what they had been up to and sure enough, they had both just finished getting high for the first time. This terrified me. I was barely getting used to my newly grown body hair, while other kids my age were already engaging in the use of illegal substances. With my anti-drug propaganda filled mind and the D.A.R.E acronym still apart of my moral code, I looked down upon my friends. I told them that they were stupid and that smoking pot was stupid. Little did I know, I had no idea what I was talking about. After more thought on the subject, it hit me. What the hell did I know? Up to that point, I had spent the majority of my life wetting the bed. Who am I make judgments on something I’ve never tried, let alone other peoples lives? So I took off my D.A.R.E t-shirt for the last time and told my friends that I was interested in trying that weed nonsense they had been raving about. So we threw a sleepover at my place and snuck out of the house at around two in the morning. We walked to an empty tall-grassed field in my neighborhood and sat in the middle of it. We all agreed that if a car passed by, we would lay on our backs until the coast was clear.

We loaded a fat bowl of this brown, low quality marijuana (the kind I would most likely sell to a group of 8th graders) and I watched my friends pass the pipe down the line and wheeze away due to their pre-pubescent lungs underestimating the harshness of the smoke. Alas, it was I, the rookie’s turn to scrape my mother’s threatening lectures from the back of my mind. I inhaled through my lungs just as I was told. Terrified, I blew it out immediately and fell into a frenzy of what sounded like malaria induced coughs and dry heaves until I actually regurgitated my cherry Mountain Dew.

One of my first dilemmas that I had gone through had occurred in 1998 when I was in high school. I had a friend who I knew was into marijuana. And they also knew that I did not agree with them using it. So one day at school my friend came up to me and told me he had two joints in his back pack for after school. I was stuck. On one hand this was my very close friend that I have known for years and I did not want him to get into trouble. But on the other hand I knew that what he was doing was wrong. So after a few hours of struggling to determine what I should do, I ended up talking to my older brother. He knew that my friend was into drugs and he knew how much it bothered me that he was. My brother also knew that my friend’s home life was extremely difficult financially and emotionally. So after talking for several minutes with my brother his advice was to talk to the vice principle about it and just keep my name out of it. I really did not want to get my friend into any serious trouble. But I also knew that the path he was on was going to eventually get him thrown in to jail or worse.…

I have always been against the use of all illegal drugs including marijuana, but while researching this topic, I have learned a lot about some of the positives of legalizing marijuana use. Considering it is classified as an illegal controlled substance, I have always been under the assumption that marijuana was bad for people, no matter what my friends may have said about how good it was. I was peer pressured into trying it when I was fourteen. I knew right away that it was not for me. It made me pass out and sick to my stomach when I woke up. That reiterated my assumption that it was bad for people. I did not understand how people could like it. I figured other people must not have had the same reaction as I did after smoking it. No matter what my opinion is, I will give both the positives and negatives of legalizing it.…

Reflecting on the 1980’s hilarious films “Cheeks and Chong Next Movie”, “up in smoke” or more recent movies such as “Half Baked” with Dave Chappelle, we all laugh at the effects of the marijuana use have on the different characters in those films. Of course, a common saying was marijuana will rob a person of their ambition, and is the gateway to the usage of other extreme drug use. More than twenty years ago the lack of education of cannabis caused people not to support the now present effortless access to medical marijuana. However, The Compassionate use Act of 1996 or Proposition 215 in the state of California has convinced me to reevaluate my old perspective in this matter and promote the use of medical marijuana.…

Marijuana is a powerful addictive drug, it will change your life from the first time you use it. It has no beneficial qualities for your health at any circumstance. Or at least, that was what I was informed from the authorities in my life till I was seventeen. I vowed to never speak to any of my friends if I heard of them using the abomination of a plant. I did just that on two different occasions and they were friends I had since elementary school. However, when I was seventeen I learned the true identity of cannabis when I saw it for the first time. I quickly observed in that moment how all the information I had been informed was untrue in many different ways. My hatred for this plant was instantly gone.…

Kingery, Alford & Coggeshall (1999) highlight that cannabis is frequently used by adolescents as the first illicit drug. It is a popular illegal recreational drug, which has been upgraded back to Class B since 2009 in the UK. The most important psychoactive substance in the cannabis plant is delta-9-tetrahydrocannibinol (THC), which is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant that binds to specific receptors in the brain called cannabinoid receptors. In low doses, THC can cause some pain reduction, may reduce aggression, can stimulate appetite, and may help reduce nausea. Higher doses may cause a 'high' leading to altered perception of time and space, and feelings of happiness or fatigue (Hall & Pacula, 2003). In the 1960s the THC content of the cannabis plant was 2-5%, it has now risen to around 5-10%, which indicates higher susceptibility to a 'high'. Hall (2006) suggests that the rising use of cannabis has heightened community concern about its impact on the health and psychological development of young people because of the observations that regular cannabis users are more likely to use other illicit drugs, perform poorly in schools, and report psychotic symptoms, depression and poorer mental health than their peers.…

I have chosen to do my research project on the effects of marijuana. Why I have chosen to do this particular topic is that among many people my age (youths) it is a very common occurrence for teens to be trying marijuana. I have come to a conclusion that for my ‘’final question’’ I will do a poster preaching to teenagers the negative effects marijuana has on the human body. Also I will state how you can lose close friends and family over wanting to get “high”. I think this research will change teenagers minds about trying marijuana due to the fact a teenager (myself) will be presenting the harm marijuana can do. I believe teenagers are more likely to listen when being preached to by someone their age.…

Okay my freshman to senior years in school, hell I barely remember High School. I was not a dumb kid just board with school. I never could wait until the end of the day when school let out maybe because I enjoyed smoking weed more. A lot of times I would cut class, depending on what class it was. I knew I could pass the class even if I wasn’t there 100 % of the time so towards the latter part of the school day I would slip right on out of school to hang out. We would also get high before school would start hell. We would be in home room high off of some weed, marijuana, or whatever you want to call it- while they called attendance. It would help the day go by easier, so we thought. One thing I did know it made us happier. Riding public transit was a bitch especially in the winter time it was too cold to be standing on the corner waiting on a city bus. Being a teenager having a good time in High School you get a thing called driving fever. In those years we would drive any kind of car- a friend, a relative’s, even stolen cars. We did not care we just wanted to drive trying to impress the ladies and have transportation back and forth to school. Now back to cutting class on those days when nobody had a car to drive we would cut class and catch the subway downtown to Time Square getting high all the way and just to hang out on 42nd street or in Central Park. Sometimes we would get bored and head up to Harlem 145th and score some blow, cocaine if we had enough funds. Back then in the 70s cocaine was pretty cheap and easy to get. It was a blast and out of all of that getting high and hanging out we still managed to get to class and finish school. So after four years of hanging out high in school, I still managed to finish and graduate High School. Boy I could not wait to get out of school. I was very lucky to make it out of school in the 70s not hooked on drugs, ending up in prison or worse dead. I knew I liked drugs a…
