A visit to the dentist

It was a cloudy and cold morning when I woke up to take Roald to the dentist. I woke him about half hour after I woke up. I cooked his favourite bacon and eggs for breakfast. We had a 10:30 appointment with the dentist and it was nearly all ready ten o’clock and I thought we’d better get going. The next minute Roald was ready to go so off we went.

It took us a good half hour to get all the way up the hill and to the dentists and by the time we got there we were late, but not by much. To our good fortune so was the doctor. We had literally just walked in the door when he called out Roald’s name. He guided us along to the surgery and told Roald to sit in the chair. The doctor had a quick look inside of Roald’s mouth and took me over the corner and whispered to me grimly ‘He’s going to have to have his adenoids removed’ ‘Does he have to’ I whispered back ‘Yes’ the doctor replied. Hearing this I stood back trying to keep a straight face to not give anything away.

‘Open your mouth the dentist said to Roald. He refused I could tell that he was scared by this doctor. ‘It wont be a second’ you wont feel a thing’ the doctor said gently. Anyone that was watching could tell that he was lying but Roald couldn’t he opened his mouth. The doctor took a little metal blade out of a mug of boiling water that was on a flame, which I hadn’t noticed up until now. Then he put a white bowl under Roald’s chin and crouched down so that he could see inside Roald’s mouth. He put the blade into his mouth taking care not to touch the sides of his mouth with the metal instrument, he took the blade right to the back of Roald’s mouth. Then as quick as a bullet he sliced out Roald’s adenoids.

Roald was coughing and spluttering blood everywhere, he was furious. As soon as he had finished spitting out all the blood I paid the doctor and marched out of there. ‘At least it’ll help you breathe clearer’ I said and walked home slowly. We both had a

Harding, the attending surgeon for the beginning of his stint at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Collins works relentlessly to match the level of expertise of colleagues. Through his hard work and unrelenting academic efforts, Collins begins to portray the hardships that await first year residents. He thwarts the notion that medical students learn everything there is to know about medicine in their time in medical school; instead, he emphasizes that the career itself is a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. During his time with Dr. Harding, he learns of a poem called Little Albert which ends with the boy getting eaten by a lion and a subsequent philosophical conclusion: “what can’t be helped must be endured.” Although Collins does not specify a meaning that should be extracted from this quote, the reader can assume its relevance to the medical field; there are plenty of ailments about which doctors can do absolutely nothing but watch the patient suffer. After Dr. Harding’s service, Collins…

Doctors examined the injuries and found traces of concussion symptoms. I spent a day in the hospital rustling through my belongings for any source of entertainment. My parents were with me in the hospital initially , but had to go home to take care of my younger sisters, so I spent some of my time feeling lonely in the protracted and dim corridors of the hospital. The food tasted abhorrent as I gulped down the remains of the dry and tasteless omelettes, sandwiches, and hamburgers. Henry felt guilty about injuring me and visited the…

I was always undecided regarding the career that I wanted to pursuit. As I got older and looked at many choices in careers I realized that I wanted to have a career in Dental Care. Dental Hygienists is a better career than Dental Assistant because of better pay. While both dental assistants and dental hygienists work under the supervision of dentists, their roles in the dental office vary. A dental assistant has administrative duties and also helps the dentist during patient procedures. Meanwhile, a dental hygienist focuses on clinical work with patients, even performing some tasks without a dentist's immediate oversight.…

Throughout my four years of high school, I have changed my mind several times on what I wanted to pursue as my career after graduation. As a senior, I have realized that all along, the dentistry field has been one of my many interests. Unlike many children, growing up as a child I have always enjoyed going to the dentist office for my teeth cleanings. Now that I am 17 and graduating in the next five months, I have decided that the Human and Health Services field, Dental Hygiene in particular, is the career pathway that I am most interested in and would like to pursue further after graduation. In pursuing this occupation, I understand that there are many personality traits that I must present. Since Dental Hygienists are around people each day at work, a hygienist must be outgoing, ambitious, and willing to interact with several different types of people. One must also get along with his or her co-workers, be a hard worker, and be willing to adapt to change that may occur in their workplace; these would be considered as required personality traits to excel in this occupation.…

As the day got longer I started to feel a gut ache coming on from eating those ghastly turnips, all I could think of to get rid of it was a slug of whisky. I knew it was unlikely someone would have a drop but it was still worth a try. I heard the galloping noise of men coming back on the horses. Once they had been back for a while and showered or whatever they do these days, I went into the bunk house and asked Slim if he had any whiskey but, sadly he didn’t.…

I push the door open. The bell tinkles, with a soft but shrill ring. A wave of rubber gloves and disinfectant masked with cheap air freshener washes over me. Chairs are cluttered in the waiting room of the dentists. Clusters of magazines lie on the scratched wood of the coffee tables, shiny bright plastic screaming out logos and slogans. A little way forward from where I stand is a desk. A smiling receptionist sits there. She seems to have been expecting me somehow, as she indicates to the couches and chairs.…
