A Short Look at Two Religions
There are many different denominations of religion to choose from. The choice is totally up to the individual; that’s what makes this country so wonderful to live in. Growing up in the Holiness church was a scary for a little girl. Choosing to be a Seventh Day Adventist was no easy decision. Holiness and Seventh Day Adventist are similar in several ways but also heavens apart.
The Holiness church meets every Wednesday and Sunday. They also partake in Sunday school for the children and adults. Children go to their class rooms and are taught about Jesus and the adults stay together to discuss their lesson, as well. Some of the Holiness choose not to follow the teachings of the Old Testament as it discusses the how to eat and keep the body healthy. Speaking in tongues is very big in the Holiness church. Once prayer begins a church elder will start to speak in a language that really isn’t a recognizable language, at all. The preacher will state that speaking in tongues is a message from God, but is it? According to Tom Brown, “Many people inaccurately define speaking in tongues as “speaking gibberish” or “talking nonsense.” The truth is, speaking in tongues is the most intelligent, perfect language in the universe. It is God’s language.” (Brown, 2012). In the Holiness religion, going to church living by God’s word, speaking in tongues and making sure the little ones have a fear of God is not a habit but a way of life. The Seventh Day Adventist(SDA) church services are held on the Sabbath, which is the Saturday. They believe that the Sabbath should be kept in accordance to the Ten Commandments. It declares that they should “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.” (Exodus 20:8-9, NIV).
