1. Parasitism - one organism, known as a parasite, lives in or on the other organism, known as the host, from which it derives nourishment. It is not in the best interest of the parasite to kill the host.…
Chapter Four addresses the social demography of health, divided into three categories: gender, age, and race. The official definition of race is a group distinguished by physical features that are viewed by the society as significant, and the term ethnicity refers to a specific group distinguished by national origin, language, or culture. However, in health and sociological research, these terms are interchangeable.…
Increasing the size of the population is generally held to be a good thing, but an even larger proportion of the world’s people is becoming convinced that the world is already overpopulated” (Hardin, 42). Increasing the population not only limits resources, it also increases the amount of misunderstanding to people “never do[ing] one thing”, which can potentially lead to a larger ecological crisis. There are many problems when it comes to population. Technology is expensive and with population growing, the price of natural resources is increasing as well. There are solutions to this issue though, but cannot be implemented right away. Hardin looks “toward voluntarism and persuasion to help create a climate of opinion that can some day support stronger measures” (Hardin, 45). By “doing the right thing”, Hardin rhetorically persuades the readers to engage in thoughtful actions that decreases the population. The first step to this solution is to create a 100% effective birth control. Society knows that contraception is not completely effective, but because of this, Hardin suggests we create a system for acceptability towards abortions if necessary. If birth control fails, abortions should be included as a “back up plan” with the cost of being preferably free. The problem with this proposal is that abortions are frowned upon in other countries. To avoid the abortion issue, young girls need to be taught to become…
There are many approaches discussed throughout the video to help the overpopulation issue. In the first part of the video they showed how a very poor family in Nepal was contributing to overpopulation a lot less than a wealthier family in America due to waste and the large amount of goods consumed by the American family. They suggest recycling more for a start. They emphasize that if Americans used less recourses on a daily basis, it would help the problem. Some health workers in Ethiopia are trying to educate people about family planning by making house calls and teaching sexual…

3. Read about how England passed through the various stages of the model on pages 61 and 62. Describe a historical event for stages 1 and 2 and a cultural attitude for stage 4.…
When my parents first met at a dance club, they never imagined changing diapers in a family bathroom a year later. My parent’s honeymoon stage in their relationship was cut short on April 13, 1991. I learned the information of my birth and mothers work history through questioning and interviewing her about employment and family experiences as well as her mothers. My mother was 23 when she had me in Sanger, California; I was their first child, born from an unplanned pregnancy and out of wedlock. Although abortion and contraception were legally attainable, these resources were economically and culturally inaccessible to my parents before my birth. My mother came to the United States when she was sixteen and worked in the fields as quickly as she could to repay her sister for traveling expenses. Her goal was to make enough money to start a better a lifestyle than the one she left back in Mexico. She stated that she did not plan on having a family until she had enough means to support herself and have a home of her own. During her interview she mentioned, “No queria hijos todavia, pero te tuve a ti a un buen tiempo,” meaning that she did not want children as early as she did, but she had to accept the outcome of her actions. My mother did not have the privilege of having an education due to her economical constraints. Therefore, my mother’s job came first and family a few years after due to the hardships of settling into a new country and culture.…
Is there a correlation between age of death before 1950 and after 1950 due to underlying factors? Between both sexes before and after 1950 from discriminating factors? What types of factors, and why?…
Recently the aging population along with decreasing birth rate in the United States today has become a major concern. In United States a major decrease in birth rate caused by a lack of fertility in addition to the low death rate and increasingly elder population the US has become one of the only few to be a part of stage four in the traditional demographic transition model developed by Warren Thompson in 1929. A large part to being in stage four of the DTM, or demographic transition model, can be related back to the baby boomer generation, increased healthcare, and new technology widely available to the public of all demographics in the United States population. Highly dependent on these things, with hardly fluctuating death rates, and birth rates, The…
Volunteering is something that can happen at all ages and each different age group has something that is important to offer when they volunteer. In volunteering the different age groups are broken down into five distinct generation cohorts (Connors, 2012). By breaking down the different ages into these generational cohorts it allows those working with the volunteers the opportunity to recognize the different strengths and characteristics that the different ages bring with them to the volunteer opportunity. The five different generational cohorts include the Greatest Generation or those that were born prior to 1926, the Traditionals or Silent Generation those that were born between 1926 and 1945, the Baby Boomers those that were born between…
The second stage of the transition model (1741-1880) saw a big increase in total population. This is predominantly due to the fact that people were beginning to live longer because outpatients were being treated in hospitals and there was a vaccination that prevented smallpox meaning that less people were dying. Also, the establishment of the public health act meant that there was sanitation and clean water around which meant that there was fewer diseases around and people had a better quality of life. This is also caused a massive reduction in death rates (From 34% in 1740 to 17% in 1880)…
One of my dreams that I would love to accomplish is increasing the percentage of women in school. My project would consist of building schools specifically for women who don’t have the necessary resources to do so. Since the demand is high for women to be in the workforce these women won’t only receive an education they will also receive a small amount of money if they pass the courses given to them. This will motivate and enhance the women and her family to attend and remain in school. The country will benefit by moving right of the demographic transition model and increasing its Human Development Index(HDI).The lack of educated women angers me as not only a women myself but, as a human being because we too deserve an education. Each woman…
But who are we to make that decision for future generations? How do we even know what decision we ourselves would make? I like to remind people how brief was the population explosion that resulted from the virtual elimination of infant mortality a century ago when we all discovered hygiene. What happened? Answer: we found that it was prohibitively expensive to have ten kids each, and we cheerfully submitted to the barbaric indignity of wearing absurd rubber contraptions every time we have sex in order to avoid this. What do you think people would have said in 1850 if you'd proposed this as a strategy to avoid the impending population explosion? Obviously they would have ridiculed you. We have no clue what we will choose when a requirement emerges to lower birth rate…
As the world economy weakens, resources continue to become limited and the interdependence among countries increase, different countries have been introducing new policies which seek to control the rate at which the human population is growing. Most of these policies have been geared towards controlling the number of children a single family should have. The main aim of these policies has been to relief the environment and the resources within it some stresses of over exploitation. However while countries like China have been doing this for a long period now, many people see it as an interference with the…
In 2011, nearly half, 4% or 2.8 million, of the 6.1 million pregnancies in the United States each year were unintended. Unintended pregnancies are detrimental not only to the people who are affiliated but the United States as a whole. The total public expenditures on unintended pregnancies nationwide were estimated to be $21.0 billion in 2010—$14.6 billion in federal expenditures and $6.4 billion in state expenditures. Having incentives both financial and non-financial incentives are an effective measure to get people to have less than or equal to two kids. An incentive such as a discounted education for the child. Furthermore, sexuality education is a critical factor that must highlight the effectiveness and numerous benefits of contraceptives. In a 2012 study among unmarried women aged 18–29, for each correct response on a contraceptive knowledge scale, women’s odds of currently using a hormonal or long-acting reversible method increased by 17%, and their odds of using no method decreased by 17 %. Universal access to safe and effective contraceptive options for both sexes is a critical factor and this policy will yield positive results and allow the economy to flourish, simultaneously decreasing…
