Delta Sigma Pi Accomplishments
High Flying Hawkeye
As a fifth grade elementary student, I knew my future involved law, and as I went through high school that love for the justice system expanded into an unparalleled passion for government and politics. Now, as a freshman at the University of Iowa studying economics and political science, I intend to do whatever is necessary to transform my dreams into a profession. Since moving to campus, I have engaged in countless opportunities that have advanced my knowledge, and prepared me for a successful career. Of these opportunities, my most notable achievements include acceptance into the brotherhood of Delta Sigma Pi, as well as the University of Iowa Student government; thus, allowing me to expand my professional network and skill set, and land my dream career in Washington. The International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity organized to foster the study of business in universities. Membership in the organization is highly exclusive, and is limited to students majoring in one or more business disciplines. As a member of the fraternity, I have access to their network of over 265,000 alumni, connecting me to thousands of public and private sector employers. These connections will serve as launch pads for graduate admissions and economic careers, which will then lead to a successful government position. While

Institutions such as Princeton and Harvard often have an effect on a student’s individual interest when it comes to Wall Street. In “Biographies of Hegemony” by Karen Ho, she expresses how these type of institutions are always after the students, through a means of interviews, observation, social events, presentations, and even conferences. When in these type of “ivy leagues,” Ho writes how everywhere a student goes he will end up surrounded by someone marketing Wall Street and they know that it will not be hard recruit and convince students that it is the path that they want to go down. The reason that this happens at these institutions is because at Wall Street, they only look for a specific category of people, that look a certain way, usually…

The moment I began the first draft of the essay that would be the grounds for a major life transformation, I had just concluded a vehement, impassioned debate with my Student Senate president regarding our Student Constitution. So as I stare at this empty page, ready to convey that ILR is where I want to make my home in the coming years, my mind is crowded with thoughts of the bylaws of Article IV, the elements the president brought up, and how I might have been wrong. Yet my inability to restrain my enthusiasm for this piece of legislation is precisely why I fit at ILR. I will be free to continue my ardent deliberation of student legislation as a transfer class representative in the Student Government Association, and I will declare a minor…

I can indulge myself in JHU’s state-of-arts library containing all historically significant political archives, or a setting to work with like-minded peers, who I struggle to find in high school, to probe into different politically scientific matter. Hopkins’ intense academics would also prompt me to face challenges—positive challenges that empower me to delve solider and deeper. Hopkins’ proximity to Washington also guarantees an opportunity for me to observe the political process in person, understanding the political process more than ever. Health of democracy depends on the number of professionals working on it to better it. After graduation, I can apply the knowledge that I would acquire through into research in electoral politics to help more people understand how politics function, all at benefits of my prospective Hopkins…

One of the greatest challenges of higher education administration systems today is meeting the needs of non-traditional students. Our global economic recession has created a competitive job market, compelling people back to school from all walks of life. Today’s student bodies comprise young parents, professionals seeking a career change, non-English speakers, international students, and traditional, collegiate 18-22 year-old American students. While such variegated student bodies add great depth to American universities, most of the current administrative paradigms have yet to accommodate for these demographic and socioeconomic diversities. As such, I believe it is incumbent upon public administration professionals to address the needs of non-traditional students at the policy level. It is…

Culinary arts, home design, business management, medical endeavors—you name it, I’ve probably read about it. I was so sure that I had exhausted all possible options until I was confronted by a book on my local libraries bookshelf entitled The Economics of Public Issues by Daniel Benjamin. I was mesmerized. My eyes perused all over the books pages and I become further and further enthralled into this new topic. I was sold, and soon political science and social activism became an essential part of my identity. Once my health stabilized to the point that traditional schooling seemed a probable part of my future, I entered Olympic Heights Community High School as a tenth-grade student. With wide eyes and determination, I nurtured my new found passion and allowed it to blossom in all facets of my life, such as extracurriculars and political participation. I also allowed it to heal the loss of stimulation I had experienced while in Hospital Homebound. My early exposure to the world of political ideas has opened me up to a realm of study that I intend to pursue in the future by researching the fields of political science in correlation with United States government, economics pertaining to the funding of social and political programs, and women’s…

Robert Kennedy's statement that "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly" has been painfully evident in my life. Until recently, I had never dared to fail greatly at anything, and as a result, I never achieved greatly at anything either. Luckily, I have learned the importance of attempting something when there's a looming possibility of failure. At Boys' State this summer, I spent a week living with 300 other young men while learning about how North Carolina's government works. To give us a firm grasp of the governmental process, each floor elected town officials, each dorm elected county officials, and the three dorms together elected the state officials. The Boys' State program also had its own moot court program from which Supreme Court Justices were elected.…

I hold my breath as I enter the observation area of the Senate Chamber. As I look down onto the floor, I fervently search for my state’s Senators. Once I establish where they are I sit and listen as the Senator’s record their votes. Even though most of my classmates find this anticlimactic, I feel my insides warming with every second that passes. In that moment, my life’s passion was confirmed. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted a career in politics. That immeasurable power of optimism, that I can make a positive change for my fellow American citizens, and that I can make history is my…
