Della's love in the gift of magi
The gift of magi is a love story of the well-known American writer- O.Henry in which the true love is challenged by the poverty. The love of Della and Jim is apparentlty revealed by the ways they think for each other, get ready to sacrifice the most valueable possessions for each other. Especially, the devotion of Della is the evidence of intense love she spends for her Jim. Della’s love demonstrates partially Shakespear’s point of view. No matter how poor the living condition is, it can not quench the fire of true love .
The story is opening with a symbolic number. “One dollar and eighty-seven cents” which is repeated five times in work. One dollar and eighty-seven cents is all of the money that Della has been saving for months . “Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied”. But the expenses for family is much higher than she calculates; therefore, she has only one dollar and eighty-seven cents left to buy a christmas present for her Jim. The repeatation of “ One dollar and eighty-seven cents” strongly expresses that the poverty surrounds Della’s life and puts her to the impasse. Her action of counting this amount of money three times in tears and the question she asked herself “But what could I do - oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents?" are manifestation of the deep sorrow and disappointment when she can not have enough money for Jim’s gift. However, Della still spends a lot of the time leading up to Christmas just thinking of what to get him. Despite the poor situation, she still wants her husband to be happy and sacrified with a fine, rare and sterling gift. The heart wins the mind, the love wins the thinking. The love of Della does not have place for poor or rich condition.
O. Herry surprises the readers by Della’s final decisive action that is the highest sacrifice for love. She

This completely changes the traditional idea that men deserve love if they only show good character and women provide said love; by changing this, Marie implies that both men and women should show good character and then provide love because they are deserving. Based on her use of Capellanus’s rules, Marie explores the idea of equality for men and women both inside, when to show affection, and outside, exemplifying good character, of relationships, which is contrary to beliefs held during the…

Although Sylvia cannot recognize her own neighborhood as a slum, or the occupants as poor in the beginning, she slowly realizes that everyone is not equal through the distribution of wealth. Sylvia is angered by the prices in F.A.O Schwarz because she knows that the items for sale are just toys, and that these toys would never take precedent over other things her parents desperately struggle to buy. This is apparent when Sylvia thinks of the thirty-five dollar clown in the store: “Thirty-five dollars could buy new bunk beds for Junior and Gretchen’s boy. Thirty-five dollars and the whole household could go visit Granddaddy Nelson in the country. Thirty-five dollars would pay for the rent and the piano bill too” (Bambara 94). Although Sylvia cannot directly face the injustices that surround her by speaking outwardly, she inwardly questions the frivolity of the wealthy in order to keep the realities of the situation at bay. Sylvia knows that the prices in the store are outrageous and that she could easily get the toys elsewhere, but what really bothers her is the fact that people actually have the money to buy the toys that are only imitations of the real thing. For instance, the price of the sailboat confuses Sylvia because she knows that not only can she build one herself for fifty cents, but that the toy boats costs as much as a real boat. Sylvia demonstrates a maturity that allows her to separate her wants from her needs, which is what seemingly distinguishes the wealthy from the poor in the story. Sylvia’s shame to enter the store and her inevitable jealously only fuels her desire to find out how others are able to make money and buy expensive things; she questions why she “ain’t in on it,” which is only answered by her recollection of Miss Moore’s words that symbolize the connection…

Likewise, Jim and Della both gave up their prized possessions to give the other happiness. When Della asked Mrs.Sofronie “Will you buy my hair”(O’Henry). The text shows the human condition through the necessity of money. For example, right here shows us the realities of money when it says “what things cost and what our parents make and how much goes for rent and how money ain’t divided right in this country”.(37) The children compare the 1000 dollar boat to how the 1ooo dollars could feed them all together for a year. Ms. Monroe encourages them to think about the value of money when she says, “Imagine for a minute what kind of society it is in which some people can spend on a toy what it would cost to feed a family of six or seven” (178). I agree with the children that the price for toys is unbelievable and outrageous. The value of money depends on if you’re poor or rich. What the poor use money for is stuff like food and rent and 1 dollar boats you make yourself; Unlike the rich who gets to use money for luxuries like 1000 boats and fur coats. For the children it’s all about social standing and “where we are is who we are” (162). Money is a necessity whether you’re rich or poor.…

In the short story, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, irony is used to make the reader expect something to happen but the opposite happens. For example, Della had bought Jim a fob using the money she got for selling her beloved and prized hair. When she showed him his present he said, "I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs." (306) This shows that they both had sacrificed the things they had been most prideful of just so that their partner could be happy, which was nice by foolish. It was unexpected to them that the the other would sacrifice their favorite thing, making the gifts useless because they were not able to use them. In addition, the name Dillingham from Mr. James Dillingham Young…

Wanting more and better is one of the quality that we all have. In the stories “The Necklace” and “The Gift of the Magi”, both writers illustrate the consequences of greed. One would wonder if people do fine much happiness through their search for material? Perhaps greed does make one’s happy at times, but because of greed people bury themselves in the bottomless pit of pain and suffering. A dust material such as a shiny watch fob or a sparkling necklace get the fake adoration that one seeks. In the end the price that is paid to obtain something materialistic is too much. “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant and “The Gift of the Magi” by O Henry develop…

Jim and Della love each other with the deep understanding of each other. Despite a very poor condition, the only thing dominating Jim and Della’s mind is to give a Christmas present for their sweetheart. Della had her hair cut and sold it because she “couldn’t have lived through Christmas without giving Jim a present”. At the same time, Jim sold the watch to buy Della a comb. Jim and Della share the same thought, even the same action. Their love “does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”-the direction to make their lover feel happy. Needless to speak out, Jim knows what Della adores is a tortoiseshell comb as well as Della knows what Jim feels “Grand as the watch was, he sometimes looked at in on the sly on account of the old leather trap that he used in place of a chain”. It shows that Della and Jim’s care for the smallest thing of the one that they love. It is their love with understanding and caring that light up the “grey” Christmas, bring warmth to their life.…

Magnificence is basically a story about a bus conductor who has taken interest in a little girl of seven. The little girl and her brother, who is of eight years old, find delight in spending time with the man because he gives them pencils – a ‘rage,’ or something that is popular; a fad – besides spending time when they would do their homework. But shortly afterwards, the action of the bus conductor, Vicente shows that he has taken a different kind of interest towards the little girl. When he gave the siblings pencils, there was a bonus for the girl, a jumbo one, because he said that “she was very bright, and deserved more…” When Vicente, the man, asked for a reward in return, the children kiss him but he jokingly said to Oscar, the girl’s older brother, that boys don’t kiss boys. When the girl kissed the bus conductor on the cheek, she embraced him, and he did so as well. His hold tightened which gave the girl an uneasy feeling. The third time the man showed his desire towards the little girl was when he asked the brother to fetch him a glass of water. As the two of them were left alone, he took her to his lap. Knowing that she was tall and quite heavy for her age, the girl asked him to put her down. The man did not say anything, except when she looked at him, his face was sweaty, and there was a strange look in his eyes. He told her to turn around and do her homework. When she suddenly felt very uncomfortable, she jumped from Vicente’s lap. Just in time, the little boy arrived with his mother who was holding a glass of zarzaparilla. Unknowingly, she had been watching in the shadows of the room. The mother asked Vicente to stay where he was. She then bade her son to do his homework, and her daughter to go upstairs to her room. She was about to reprimand Vicente, who had her daughter’s papers of homework held onto his stomach, but saw that Oscar was still in the room. She asked him also to go to his room before telling…
