Management and Leadership at Dell Computers Tiffany Seda November 8, 2010 Greg Flick MGT/330

“Leadership and management are two opposing styles of employee supervision actively used within today’s business world” (Kumle & Kelly, 2006, Para. 1). The basic skills in leadership and management include problem solving, decision making, planning, meeting management, delegation, and communications; balancing these skills can differentiate between a successful management and leadership team. According to Dell (2010) “Since the first Dell PC was introduced in 1986, Dell has continued to shape the industry by breaking new ground and pioneering critical developments in home, small business and enterprise computing. Dell 's research and development (R&D) efforts now span the globe, driven by some of the industry 's foremost product designers and engineers. At the core of Dell 's innovation approach, however, remains an unwavering commitment to deliver new and better solutions that directly address customer needs” (Innovation Approach, para.1 ) The basic skills of leaders and managers within a corporation include leading the company in a positive direction. At Dell computers serving customers is the core of the leadership and management styles. Dell computers leaders play roles and responsibilities to maintain a healthy organizational culture. Globally across borders Dell computers encourages a collective effort to remain successful in many countries. Strategies for guidelines used in Dell’s corporation are to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture. Management and leadership are responsible for establishing systems, which continue to make Dell computers a successful organization. Dell computers focus is on investing in their employees as both leaders and managers to learn and excel as the next generation of Dell. In combining both

    The world of technology continues to change for the better. One piece of technology that has made some interesting changes is video games. We’ve come from simple “plug-and-play” video games to systems with motion sensors. One of the first video game systems, the Atari, was introduced in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell, a University of Utah Engineering major. Bushnell’s idea came from working in a pinball arcade during his undergraduate studies to help pay for tuition. The Atari created a new way to play arcade games such as ping pong (or simply “Pong”), space wars, and Pac-man. He started a company with his friend and hired another engineer to develop games for the system. He installed the first version of the system in a small tavern, and public showed great interest in the video game “Pong”. Many said he stole the idea of Pong from another well known video game artist, Ralph Baer, who had patents on his system (the Magnavox Odyssey) a few years before Bushnell’s system came out. In the mid 1970s he paid Magnavox a flat amount of $700,000 for a license to use Baer’s patent. Bushnell and his partners went thru several changes to make the Atari better to keep up with and ahead of competitors. Atari finally went belly up when its manufacturers refused to produce a newer version of the system to keep up with competitors. They were even offered a deal with Nintendo to produce the label under the Atari name, but they declined (Alex, 2008). Although the Atari, Inc was not as large organizations such as Tyco International, or Chrysler, specific organizational behavior theories could have predicted or explained the company’s failure.…

    Further, Dell takes specific actions to maintain control and monitoring of employees. The first step that Dell uses for micromanagement of employees is through senior advisory groups. These groups of highly educated employees in the field with a long track record of experience give certain employees monthly conference calls to check up on high-level issues that affect Dell worldwide. Second, Dell performs quarterly financial reviews to monitor how employees are spending their time and thus to ensure that these workers are using efficient use of time in order to accomplish the priorities for the company. Michael Dell founded Dell Computer in 1984. At the time he was only 19 years old, and in his first year of studies at the University of Texas in Austin. Michael Dell had a simple but powerful vision: that personal computers could be built to order and sold directly to customers. This followed from his belief that the PC, made up of little more than software from Microsoft and chips from Intel, was rapidly becoming a commodity product. Dell's new approach to the PC business had two advantages: (1) bypassing distributors and retail dealers reduced marketing and sales costs by eliminating the markups of resellers, and (2) building to order greatly reduced the costs and risks associated with carrying large volumes of both and finished goods. Michael Dell started his company with only US$ 1,000 of capital.
