Why are young people, under the age of 15, outside after 9pm? Young people are being hurt and killed and communities are hurting. By April of this year, seven teenagers had died violent deaths. (Mayor Seeks Input From Teens After Rash Of Juvenile Murders, 2014). Everyone is scrambling to find a way to keep our juveniles safe. It’s been proven that Baltimore city streets are not safe for juveniles and the fact is that many of these unfortunate events could be prevented if juveniles are in their homes and safe with their families instead of being on the streets. Juvenile curfew laws are local ordinances that prevent people under a certain age from being on the streets after during or after certain hours. Juvenile curfews are important in keeping juveniles as well as communities safe.
Many juveniles feel curfews are just another way of adults being able to tell them what to do, and are very likely to simply ignore the curfew. In many cases, curfews are not set up as punishment but as a way to keep everyone safe. The legislative intent for setting juvenile curfew laws is normally to prevent crimes involving juveniles and retaining peace and order in our society. It’s important for juveniles to understand the seriousness of curfews and their significance. When I came upon three underage male and one underage female teenagers during my routine patrols out long after curfew, I was compelled to investigate. I immediately called for back up prior to approaching the teenagers as it is quite common for juveniles in my area to run from the police and to be uncooperative. I
