    1) How much importance should be given to the energy cost situation? Michael Burton’s proposal to expand into new energy efficient products is justified by increasing interest in the public and private sectors to reduce energy costs. At the highest level of government, the Obama administration has tied the US economy’s energy policy with its future success and competitiveness with other global powers. In a speech on June 2009, President Obama specifically mentions the Energy Department’s plans to implement “…aggressive efficiency standards for common household appliances – like refrigerators and ovens – which will spark innovation, save consumers money, and reduce energy demand.”1 Sarah Max from Money magazine (2010) also mentions that there are over 100 state programs that offer additional incentives for home energy efficiency. She points out that there 6 times as many programs offered by utility companies as well.2 In all, home consumers are being highly incentivized through rebates and tax credits to make home energy improvements— including the purchase of energy efficient appliances. Presumably Tesca Work’s new product will meet the Energy Star standards established by the EPA and DOE. According to the Energy Star achievements report for 2010, American households purchased around 200 million Energy Star qualified products that year (3.5 billion since 2000).3 The energy cost situation is one that the Tesca Works cannot ignore in their product development and marketing strategies. 2) Forecast the project’s cash flows for the next twenty years. What assumptions did you use? This project’s cash flows are projected over twenty years based on three assumptions or scenarios for the product’s demand: Weak, Average, and Strong. Each scenario’s variables are outlined in the Table 1 below:…

    1. Family owned business is a business that is owned by one family, most of the shareholders are from the same family. One of the major problems in this type of business is a conflict in interests among the family’s member. The auditor should be careful and observe the type of the relationship among the family’s member. There should be a written agreement to specify rights, duties, and obligations for each member, the auditor should read those documents for further information. One issue that faced the auditor is to understand the attitude of each member, the risk of manipulating facts can be existed due to the close relationship. In the case of Jack Greenberg, the son has manipulated the numbers in the record for his father’s sake and no one would be able to prevent him since he is one of the owners. The possibility of hiding facts is high in this kind of business because of the close relationship among the family’s member. I believe the family owned business demands more effort from the auditor to check and discover misstatements.…

In December 1995, the flamboyant entrepreneur Michael "Mickey" Monus, formerly president and chief operating officer (COO) of the deep-discount retail chain PharMor, Inc., was sentenced to 19 years and seven months in prison. Monus was convicted for the accounting fraud that inflated Phar-Mor's shareholder equity by $500 million, resulted in over $1 billion in losses, and caused the bankruptcy of the twenty-eighth largest private company in the United States. The massive accounting fraud went largely undetected for nearly six years. Several members of top management confessed to, and were convicted of, financial-statement fraud. Former members of Phar-Mor management were collectively fined over $1 million, and two former Phar-Mor management employees received prison sentences. Phar-Mor's management, as well as Phar-Mor creditors and investors subsequently brought suit against Phar-Mor's independent auditors, Coopers & Lybrand LLP (Coopers), alleging Coopers was reckless in performing its audits.
