Derogatory comments toward women
“Damn girl!” *Looks her up and down as she walks past. Whistles. Then hits his guy friend on the shoulder and points to her. “I’d tap that!”
This was said to me as I was walking past a group of guys after school the other day. I did not respond to their continuous whistles and chants as they beckoned me to come over. I continued to walk past them faster as I thought to myself “Who are these guys? They don’t even know me! Man this really makes me feel uncomfortable!” I didn’t respond to their whistles or come to their calls because I am not a dog. I do not deserve to be treated that way. Nor does any female deserve to be treated that way. I believe that degrading comments toward women are an extreme issue in today’s society and they need to stop.
It is one thing to call a girl beautiful; however it is another thing to make a sexual comment about her body type as if the only thing women are good for is sex. Men overestimate women’s tolerance for derogatory comments directed at women, and fail to understand that these comments are physically, emotionally, and mentally disturbing.
People in general are so consumed with wanting to elevate their status, they are blind to the fact that in doing so they don’t actually have any upward movement of their own, just suppressing others into a downward movement resulting in yes, being higher than others, but no actual movement on their own behalf.
Did they literally move up? No
Are they above others? Yes, but only because they pushed others down not only socially, but mentally and physically.
Confidencecoalation.org states that 90% of all women want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance. It also reports that women would rather be called beautiful or pretty, than sexy or hot. I also agree with this poll. I prefer to be looked at as a female and not as a sexual object. Women are routinely degraded in everything

The article “Girls’ Bodies, Girls’ Selves: Body Image, Identity, and Sexuality” by Elline Lipkin is an informative article describing how men and women are treated differently in certain scenarios throughout the country. The title of the article suggests that females are having trouble figuring out who they really are with or without the help of media and advertisement. The title also suggests that women are the only ones who suffer from sexual objectification, which is not the case.…

The cashier at the gas station admires the business man that comes in everyday in his crisp suit, as the janitor of a building admires that famous actress on TV. We are all trying to attain that next material thing; whether it is job or a new set of rims on our car we think things will bring us happiness. We let others put a value to the definition of success, and then we run after that. What we don't realize is that even if we did attain what they define as success, once we attained it they would push the bar up and find something new that would the new measure of success. It is like the saying goes we are always trying to "keep up with the Jones'".…

In his opening statement, he says "Warning for our male readers: The following article contains big words and complex sentences. It might be a good idea to have a woman nearby to explain it to you."# In my opinion, this quote is very degrading because in simple terms its calling every man an idiot. Male bashing seems like it originated from a bunch of lonely women who probably got dumped by their husband/boyfriend and this is how they get their payback. You would think that the men would have done something about it from a long time ago, but in reality they are just the silent victims. They have no say and can do nothing about it because the media and our society evidently agrees with what the women have to…

Esquire editor Alex Bilmes sums up this mindset with three simple words: “Women are objects.” (Hamilton) While many men most likely do not share Mr. Bilmes’ views to this extreme, they most certainly support and encourage it through their actions, albeit subconsciously. Much of this support stems from the pornography industry, which idolizes women primarily as sex objects. Men are the most common customers when it comes to pornography (men at 72% of the customer base and women at 28%); therefore, men are the primary source of encouragement suggesting that women’s role should be as visually attractive objects. (Pornography Statistics) As men long to see women in real life look as the women do from their pornography, a new standard for beauty is slowly encouraged until it begins to normalize and feel natural to women. Mr. Bilmes also refers to women stating, “It’s a thing you might want to look at.” (Hamilton) Comments such as this capture in its essence what sort of underlying messages women’s minds have absorbed throughout the years of their lives, even subconsciously. Once a seed has been planted in one’s mind, it only takes water to let it grow and flourish. Just as the seed was planted, men simply suggested women take on a more beautiful and sexier appeal to compete with women from magazines and videos, and the idea has spread rampantly throughout the entire American…

In Maxine Sheets-Johnstone’s excerpt, “Females as Docile Bodies” she claims that “women inspire male sexual desire simply by existing.” In western culture, especially in the twenty first century, women are constantly analyzed by men solely based on their appearance. A women’s appearance alone creates male arousal which leads to the degrading demeanor of males towards the female body, reducing a woman as a whole being to only particular body parts like the genitalia. You hear about examples of this instance in the media all the time. The real question is as women, should we conform to the opinions of the world and agree with this claim. Should we truly just leave ourselves as women, subject to the perception of the world? As women we don’t have to try hard to stimulate a man’s sexuality or sexual thoughts; it happens visually by “being in the eyes of males”.…

Men spend billions of dollars to keep their body image in check. The over use of objectification in today's society is absurd . As said in English, “a male is using his body to be a backdrop for a ladies beautiful dress in prom pictures” (Ms. Jenkinson). The male is just an object standing there and smiling behind a girl who has a beautiful dress on.…

Another subtle way in which sexism exists isn’t even committed by men—women are taking part in a cycle of misogyny and hatred of the members of their own gender. Very commonly nowadays you see young girls and even grown women claim to be different from their female peers in order to seem more appealing to men. It’s a very simple self-perpetuating way for misogyny to exist without ever being perpetrated by males. With the “not-like-other-girls” mindset, women are pitted against other women, as opposed to standing in solidarity against the very institutional sexism they have been unknowingly perpetuating. Girl-on-girl hate has been sensationalized and normalize in the media via television shows (see Gossip Girl), movies (see Mean Girls), and books (see The Clique series) all of these are specifically targeted for young girls. Often the antagonists of these stories are female peers and the happy ending or “reward” is finally getting to be with which ever boy that has been lusted over for the length of the story. While they do highlight the very real issue of bullying in schools, these stories do little to nothing to promote the friendship and commonality that young girls have together. In relation to the aforementioned grievance, self-image doesn’t have to be limited to one’s personality or appearance—it can refer to one’s gender, and can lead to the dislike of members of one’s own…

An argument against my point may be that many songs do use words that demean women such as songs that play on the radios and in clubs or in public in general. This is wrong because first of all, usually on the radio and clubs use clean versions of music. There is clubs though that do use words in them that shouldn't be used, but if the words are used why are no women in the clubs saying something about these words when they are demeaning. (Fix CA) My third main point is that there are artists in the rap genre who do not use words that demean women. Christian Rapper, Lacrae, cannot use words that disrespect women because it is against his religion of being a Christian rapper. Many of his albums talk about church and god and nothing about drugs,…
