Deforestation
Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands. The term does not include the removal of industrial forests such as plantations of gums or pines. Deforestation has resulted in the reduction of indigenous forests to four-fifths of their pre-agricultural area. Indigenous forests now cover 21% of the earth's land surface. In a forest the crowns of individual trees touch to form a single canopy. In a woodland, trees grow far apart, so that the canopy is open.

The concern is the rate at which deforestation is occurring. Currently, 12 million hectares of forests are cleared annually - an area 1,3 times the size of KwaZulu/Natal! Almost all of this deforestation occurs in the moist forests and open woodlands of the tropics. At this rate all moist tropical forest could be lost by the year 2050, except for isolated areas in Amazonia, the Zaire basin, as well as a few protected areas within reserves and parks. Some countries such as Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Costa Rica, and Sri Lanka are likely to lose all their tropical forests by the year 2010 if no conservation steps are taken.

Deforestation occurs because of: Conversion of forests and woodlands to agricultural land to feed growing numbers of people; development of cash crops and cattle ranching, both of which earn money for tropical countries; commercial logging (which supplies the world market with woods such as meranti, teak, mahogany and ebony) destroys trees as well as opening up forests for agriculture; felling of trees for firewood and building material; the heavy lopping of foliage for fodder; and heavy browsing of saplings by domestic animals like goats. To compound the problem, the poor soils of the humid tropics do not support agriculture for long. Thus people are often forced to move on and clear more forests in order to maintain production.

Some consequences are:

The carbon cycle. Forests act as a major carbon store because carbon dioxide (CO2)

Every second, 1.5 acres of trees are cut down in a rainforest. That’s equivalent to two football pitches per second. At this rate, the Amazon rainforest will become devoid of life by 2030. Cutting down trees not only damages large habitual areas of the estimated 30 million people who live in the rainforest along with the animals they solely depend on, but affects the environment in many harmful ways. This can be through rapid and violent changes in the climate, an unbalanced ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen impacting hugely on global warming, damage to the biodiversity of animals and tribes and fatal effects to the soil. Trees that are cut down can be used for a variety of different common purposes including rubber, oil, wax, glue and, more importantly, fuel. However, the list does not stop there. Trees are cut down to gain access to medicinal plants and create vast spaces to mine important ores. Yet possibly the biggest reason trees are cut down is to grow food. Commercial farmers need more land space to cultivate crops to feed our ever growing population as well as local farmers providing food for their family.…

The Amazon rainforest the largest tropical area in the world, a vast and humid area where thousands of species of mammals, fish and insects have been unidentified by human; thus being the largest rainforest in the world, it is also the largest area of deforestation where football fields after fields are taken down a minute. The Amazon Deforestation being a growing issue amongst society in this generation can be prominently analyzed from the commodities derived from logging; to the negativity it can cause the environment as a result of erosion.…

World wildlife fund (WWF2016) reported that about 80 percent of the world’s land animals and plants live in forests. Removing forests abolishes these species’ homes, forcing them to relocate or risk dying. Other factors that affect deforestation are, Agricultural Activities: agricultural activities are one of the major factors affecting deforestation. Due to overgrowing demand for food products, huge amount of tress is falling down to grow crops, land space for housing and for cattle grazing (WWF2016).…

In all rainforest regions in the world, deforestation has become a major problem. The rainforest is arguably the most complicated and largely interwoven ecosystem on land. However, this treasure is being lost and demolished day by day, the land being cleared away for the pure interest of money making, in the process of deforestation. Not only are thousands of species of organisms being driven to extinction, but we are also effectively eliminating any chance of studying many of the species. Also, deforestation has a major impact on the atmospheric balance of the world, and if it continues at the rate it is now, then soon the world's entire way of living will be forced to change, and not for the good. If the people of the world do not begin to be more contentious, then soon rainforests will become nothing more than a glorious legend of the past.…

Deforestation is the cutting down of a large area of trees and the destruction of forests by people. Forests are what we call an exhaustible resource, one which can be used up if it is not used carefully. Over the last few decades, deforestation has threatened the rainforests with total extinction. To understand why deforestation is such an important issue, you first have to understand why trees matter. Trees improve in many ways the life of all species, including the human race. They help to maintain the Earth’s benevolent atmosphere, provide shelter for much biodiversity, but also have a high commercial value. As a consequence there is much critical debate around the causes and solutions for deforestation.…

In this section, it was suggested that deforestation occurring in Ghana is leading to the expansions of savannahs. I believe that this is an important section, as many do not realize that many African countries are also suffering from deforestation, which is depleting the lands, creating more savannahs and deserts. This section gave me further knowledge on the crisis of deforestation in Ghana and how it affects the people that live there. It explains how the soil is becoming depleted, which in the long term, will greatly effect the people living in these…

Last September there was a UN Climate Summit held in New York where scores of countries, companies and non-profit organizations joined together to halve the deforestation by 2020 and completely eliminate it by 2030. This shows as the necessity to prevent deforestation. There are several ways to bring down the rate of deforestation which we will research in deep later in this project.…

To understand why deforestation is such a pressing and urgent issue, forests must first be given credit for what they bring to global ecosystems and the quality of life that all species maintain. The forests have global implications not just on life but on the quality of it. Trees improve the quality of the air that species breath by trapping carbon and other particles produced by pollution. Because of the deforestation of the rainforest, nearly half of the world 's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century…

The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world which covers over five and half a million square kilometers. Over half of the Amazon is located in Brazil but also in South American countries; Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, Bolivia and Suriname. (Science Kids, 2013). During the past 40 years, 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been cut down, this percentage could be higher but was not put in account due to logging.this causes damage and shows that there is less seen cuts. Scientists says that 20% trees could be lost in the next two decades. (National Geographic, 1996) The Amazon gets worse and worse every time it is observed. The main cause for this is deforestation. This investigation will show what is happening to the Amazon Region and what could be the management for it.…

The first major reason for deforestation appears to be shifting cultivation. Shifting cultivation is a type of land-usage system in which fields are farmed temporarily. To begin with, people continually affect the forests in that way as they aim to acquire crops and graze spaces. Also, intensive farming has destructive influences on deforestation. According to “Cool Planet”, if there is not enough time to regain from exhaustive agriculture, soil degradation…

But what all does deforestation actually affect? The list is nearly endless, because it is different in every environment and population. On a global scale though deforestation affects greenhouse gases, climate, soil fertility, water quality, watersheds, and biodiversity. Deforestation causes all of the CO2 gases stored in trees to be released into the atmosphere which increases greenhouse gases and ultimately affects the climate and global warming. Tropical deforestation alone, “accounts for about 15 percent of the world’s global warming pollution—more than that produced by every car, truck, plane, ship, and train on Earth” (Boucher 1). The area where deforestation occurs destroys the soil’s fertility inhibiting it from being able to regrow there. Erosion caused by deforestation runs off into streams, rivers, and lakes which affect the water quality and watersheds. Deforestation also affects biodiversity, because it kills or helps kill off plants and animals that are important to the local environment.…

Medicine, homes, lives, and more demolished on a daily basis due to tropical deforestation. Unfortunately, tropical forests are being demolished everyday all over the world. “The clearing of tropical forests across the Earth has been occurring on a large scale basis for many centuries.” This once widely known issue has been quite in the North-Eastern United States. The issue was once broadcasted over the television, magazines, newspaper, and all sources of media. Now it is rarely heard of, even though it is still happening. Tropical forests are much too important to be demolished, further more to not even be concerned with.…
