Definition Essay: What Is Respect?
What is respect? According to oxforddictionaries.com, respect is “a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.” Many other websites coincide with this definition. I agree with them because that is what I was always taught.

Respect is one of the things that will make you successful in life. Many people will notice that you are more mature. You will be easier to work with because you act with kindness. People will respect you more if you treat them with it. They will do this because respect is a mutual thing. If somebody treats me with respect I will treat them with respect. If they do not my reaction would be disrespect as well.

Respect is a natural thing for me. I was raised to treat everyone

If you damage it on accident you should take responsibility for it and fix the situation. You should not play with fire, unless teachers give you permission. You should not use school property for the wrong purposes. You should read a book, write with a pencil, sit in a chair, and follow the rules.

To me, respect is one of the most important qualities to have. Unfortunately, not everyone has this viewpoint. I have witnessed many people treat others with disrespect. Many students disrespect school staff and property. Sometimes it gets out of hand. They write on desks, destroy books, use school supplies for bad ideas, and are rude to the faculty. Almost every desk I look at has writing on it. I hear many students talk back to teachers. Many school books and many other supplies are scuffed up and ripped.

I have heard many rumors about people in less than half of a school year. They normally destroy friendships and/or

From past experiences I have learned the real meaning of respect. This word is more powerful than one can imagine. With respect comes unselfishness. When people respect others, they are treated equally. My mother and father always told me to be tactful in the way I treated others, so I would also be respected. It has worked in the past and will always hold true in the future. If someone respects another with proper judgment, people feel good inside which gives them a sense of integrity. When I give respect and witness how it makes others feel, I feel like more of a person. I feel proud. Honored.…

A great example of treating people with respect is bullying. Bullying happens all the time at all times of the day. People bully people in school, on the internet, and even at home. Sometimes the bully has the motive to hurt people and break someone else down because they are hurting on the inside themselves. The way they express themselves is the wrong way to do it, but it happens. I remember in school, they always said that a bully becomes a bully when they, themselves had been bullied. It is a serious matter these days because people hurt themselves for being bullied. That goes back to my point where I said that it could impact someone life.…

You have to respect yourself before you can respect anyone else. As a student here at Royal High School I have seen many students that are very disrespectful to adults; they do not understand the meaning of character, if they did, they would do things differently. If one of my friends ever got out of line with an adult, I would tell them that their behavior is unacceptable, if I allowed my friend to act that way and I did not say anything, then I would be upholding them in their…

Respect; a topic people tend to have many different opinions on in terms of its definition. Some people live with the Idea that, respect is as respect does. Why can’t respect be given by everyone from the beginning? In sports it is a motive to gain the respect of one’s opponent but in real life, people often live by that same motto. Is this wrong? Respect is a behavior to “admire someone because of his or her knowledge, skill, personal qualities” or “to be careful not to do anything against someone’s wishes, right” (Longman Dictionary of American English, p. 776). Respecting other people is an ethical behavior that is good not only in academic environment but also in personal life. People have their own background, beliefs, opinions, characteristics, and points of view. I think that when people respect each other, they will resolve their conflicts or disagreements quickly and peacefully. I understand that by treating my classmates, professors, faculty, and staffs respectfully, I contribute to building a better academic environment at University of Phoenix.
