Definition Essay Success
Success is a term that, in today’s society, is frequently associated with the accumulation of wealth, esteem, or achievements throughout one’s lifetime, but to me, success holds a much more specified and personal meaning to each and every one of us. Merriam-Webster defines success as “: the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame” (“success”). Generally speaking, I agree with this definition, because to the majority of the population living today, I feel that this applies to them.
On the other hand, when I think about success, I find its meaning to be much more internal, and having a very little dependence on anyone else’s definition of the word. I believe success to be solely defined by the individual themselves. Albert Schweitzer …show more content…
The news often highlights stories of celebrities or what society would define as “successful people,” that seem to be nothing shy of miserable with their lives. They may have a great deal of wealth or esteem, but when it really boils down to the person themselves, deep down I would not define them as being successful. On the other end of the spectrum, however, there are many people out there who live far from lavishly, have modest paychecks, and achievements that very view would be impressed by, and yet they are happy. To me, that is success. Loving what you do, making the right choices for yourself, and following your dreams.
To summarize, my definition of success seems to vary from the traditional dictionary definition, which tends to define the word as a measure of things that can be physically accumulated. I believe the definition of success hinges not upon the things generally defined by society as making someone successful, but rather upon the things that apply only to you, and the things that make you happy. Success is achieving the goals that you set for yourself, without worrying about stacking up to others. Success is actively being the best person that you can be. In my eyes, success is to truly be
