Definition Essay: True Friendship In today’s society you could walk into a room and make five friends within the hour. Although this is true, it does not mean that you share a true friendship with them. The term friendship is defined as a friendly feeling or help given to someone. This merely scratches the surface of what friendship truly is. A true friendship includes time, respect, and trust. I have had many friends come into and out of my life but there has always been one that has stayed true to me. Even though my friend, Gracie, was forced into my life when I was born, we chose to accept it. With our fathers being college roommates it caused us to become friends before we could talk. Even though we have spent most of our lives together we did not realize it was a true friendship until three years ago. I also have had a great example set for me watching my parents interact with their friends and with each other.It is a rare thing to find someone that shows all three of these characteristics towards you. A true friendship takes time. You cannot just ask questions and answers to get to know a person. The best way to get to know a person is to simply devote time to them and give them your undivided attention. The experiences you have with this person is what makes your friendship with them unique and strong. You also have to have respect for them. This takes time to build up, which is another reason spending time together is such an important part in being a true friend. You have to respect their thoughts, ideas, and space. If you cannot respect their thoughts and ideas they will have a very hard time communicating with you. Communication is a tremendously important factor because it keeps your connected with that certain friend. Make sure to have respect for their space.
