By definition, an American is a native or citizen of the United States. Seems pretty simple right? Well, not all Americans would agree. You see, being American is so much more than just living in the U.S. My definition of being an American is having pride, freedom and the feeling of honor when I say the Pledge of Allegiance and during the national anthem. Democracy, freedom, justice, and patriotism are all key words of an
American.

Not only is nationalism important to Americans, but we also accept people from all over the world. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free." They see the statue of Liberty, greeting them to our beautiful, free country.
Welcoming all immigrants, Lady Liberty symbolizes America by introduction the freedom and honor of America. We come together as one country, indivisible, with freedom and justice for all.

What an honor it is to even say that our troops bravely risk their lives every single day for the freedom of America. Patriotism is countless acts of love and care, and that’s what makes an American and American. If you where asked the question today what it means to you to be an American, what would you say? Would you say, "An American is someone who lives in America and are free but also holding your hand over heart

2 of 2 during the national anthem." or would you really go into depth of what it really means.
For some people, the meaning is different. For some are similar, but being an American is so much more than Saying the pledge of allegiance, and being a free citizen. So what does it mean to you?

We shouldn’t take this for granted because so many people around the world are unfortunate to not have this gift that most of us were born with or given.…

Americans have often given their assent to fight for and defend our freedom. This is evidenced in American history such as the Boston Massacre, the Revolutionary War, and to the the compromises made in writing the US Constitution to establish our own country. In his famous speech, Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death…” He believed, along with other founding forefathers, that it was time to break away from Great Britain, and for Americans to govern themselves. With this belief, America’s forefathers assented and committed to free themselves from British tyranny, and to establish a country where people governed themselves and were free to practice their own religions. They assented to fight for liberty.…

Over a hundred years ago our founding fathers created the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and of course our Bill of Rights. Legally speaking, an American citizen is defined as someone who is “born or naturalized in the United States.” However, is the true meaning of an American simply a textbook definition? Being an American is not only having legal documentation but rather being able to recognize the beliefs of freedom, equality and opportunity put forth by the Founding Fathers of our nation.…
