Deer Hunting: A Short Story
The bus screeched to a stop and I quickly walked to the front, stumbling over all the backpacks. My dad was standing at the door all dressed in his camo, as I ran up my driveway I could hear him yelling. “It’s going to be a good night, I can feel it”. It was already late in my first deer hunting season and I hadn’t seen a deer yet. I was ready within minutes and jumped into the already running truck. It felt like eternity and I kept thinking I can’t do this. It was a cold, foggy, humid November night and I only had 1 more day to find a deer. It was the end of November and that year we had 3 feet of snow already, so my dad dug out a spot for me to sit down and leaned against a small tree. You can do it, don’t think about it much. Hours later I heard “crunch” and my dad whispered “here she comes, she will come from your left, wait until she stops.” My body started shaking, partially because I was cold and partially because of the adrenaline. I watched as this brown, scruffy looking animal came walking past me. My mine was going crazy and somehow I raised my gun and looked down the scope as she stopped. Ok, just aim and pull the trigger, you have done that a hundred times at the shooting range. “Boom” I couldn’t see anything, the fog held the smoke from the muzzleloader in front of me. “You hit her!” My dad was more excited then I was at the moment. “We’ll give her a minute and then go see.” We watched her run out of the field but she looked fine. Finally after giving her a few minutes, we went to check. Oh My God, I can’t believe that I did it. After minutes of searching, we learned that I hit her in the leg and partially in the stomach. “Lets just leave her for the night and we will come back and get her in the morning.” Morning came quick.
