Decision Making In Oedipus The King
In the play of Oedipus Rex ,written by Sophocles, it’s argued by many people and even Aristotle. These people say that the main character shows many flaws during the story . One of the things that Aristotle argues about is that Oedipus downfall was made by his own poor decision making. Oedipus is a strong independent man ,but he was too blind to realize what was going on throughout the whole story. The destiny of Oedipus was already decide. In this story Sophocles tell us this incredible story with this character called Oedipus who’s fate was already set for him. Oedipus was born to a royal family in the city of Thebes. .Oedipus can see but one side of a matter-too often he sees that wrongly-and it is his fashion immediately to act upon such half-knowledge, at the dictates, not of his reason at all, but of the first feeling which happens to come uppermost. His is no deliberate vice, no choice of a wrong purpose. His purposes are good. His emotions, his thoughts, even his errors, have an ardent generosity which stirs our deepest sympathy.” There was this prophecy about Oedipus that said that he was going to kill his father and marry his mother. All of this does come true ,but Oedipus tragic flaw made it happen even though he didn’t want the prophecy to come true. The tragic flaw that Oedipus posses is that he tends to not think twice about his choices and the consequences they may have. When Oedipus was on his way to thebes he encounters this group of men on the crossroads that were harassing him. Oedipus could’ve ignored them and just keep on walking ,but this is when his tragic flaw comes in action. He decides to kill every men in the group except one man that got to escaped. Oedipus not knowing who those people were , he had no hesitation of killing them. It turns out that one of
