Should Some States Continue with its Death Penalty?
"As if one crime of such nature, done by a single man, acting individually, can be expiated by a similar crime done by all men, acting collectively" (Lewis Lawes, warden of Sing Sing prison in NY in the 1920s and 30s.) Many people think that is right to have payback over something that has been done to them and other think that it is brutal and goes against human morals. Also many people often questioned whether it 's fair to continue with the death penalty and whether the punishment is legal or not. Death Penalty is given to criminals because it has been said that it is a danger to society to have such persons. This depends on whether the punishment serves a valid point or not. Death penalty doesn’t prevent people to commit murder; even now the highest rate of homicide happens mostly in states that have the capital punishment. Due to the death penalty many people get to fulfill a desire for revenge, they also get negative results out of it like taking a life away without having the authority as God does to do so.
One of the main ideas of using the death penalty is to be an example to the people; however many criminologists agree that the death penalty does not decrease the capital crimes. If it does not fulfill one of its basic functions, how could it be effective? If it cannot be effective at all and fulfill the expectations, why do it? A society that deals violence with violence will only achieve more violence. Today, the people is still not sure if it is fair or not to enforce the death penalty in some states. Should a murderer get his own life taken or should it be called a cruel unusual punishment? People are just beings and can therefore make mistakes. If a prisoner happen to be innocent and was executed there would be nothing to do to change what has been done. Although we have modern tools to know, for example DNA testing, there is still a one

First, let us analyze the reason why certain people crave for death penalty, while others are so against it. Nowadays ruthless crimes like mass killing of children, raping of infants, slaughtering women and innocent little ones, are being committed. And what do the criminals get? A couple of years in prison, then a bribe will settle things out. In a corrupted, hypocritical society like ours, any punishment consisting in time spent in prison would be unfair and not enough to pay off for the suffering that such criminals include. That is, they ruin lives, they take innocent lives, so the penalty should be death right? A life for a life, a hand for a hand, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, isn’t it?…

The death penalty goes back as far as the 17th century. From burning alive to beating to death, the death penalty was carried out in some of the cruelest and most painful ways one could imagine. Although more efficient ways of execution have been discovered, such as lethal injections, capital punishment is still ruthless and a lot of times unnecessary. Capital punishment is like the easy way out of dealing with criminals by “eliminating the complexities of judge and jury” (Source J), when there are much more efficient punishments that could be used when dealing with a felony. Capital punishment should not be used for so many different reasons; it is immoral, very costly and mistakes that could be prevented happen way too often.…

For instance, it is unfair to the criminals in which the evidence against them is weak and in which it was an accident. Executing a person who could possibly be innocent is morally wrong and inhumane. I believe that for the criminals to die in such a public and painful way is cruel and unusual. It is not an effective way of handing out justice. The death penalty can also keep the victim’s families stuck in an angry stage of grief. Moreover, the death penalty might bring the opposite of what survivors of crime most need; accountability, healing and closure. Those criminals have family and loved ones too. Some of them even have a wife and children, why should they suffer by seeing or knowing that their loved one is being sentenced to death?…

The death penalty has been a criminal sentence imposed in America for hundreds of years, but it have been extremely controversial as Evan Mandery illustrates in “A Wild Justice: The Death and Resurrection of Capital Punishment in America.” Today, the death sentence is strictly used in murder cases and in thirty-two out of the fifty states in America. In these states, it is completely legal to use the ultimate punishment of death to incapacitate a criminal from committing any further harm to society. Throughout American history, many individuals have supported the death penalty because they believe it is an effective way to deter crime and is a form of retribution. Others have strongly advocated against capital punishment because it is not morally correct and it not applied fairly. Also, some argue that it is unconstitutional to use the death penalty because it violates the cruel and unusual punishment provision of the Eight Amendment written in the United States Constitution.…

Many look upon this topic as a religious moral issue. The National Coalition against Death Penalty states that “the death penalty devalues all human life- eliminating the possibility for transformation of human spirit.” This organization also states that the death penalty “is fallible and irrevocable” , their studies show that over 100 inmates have been released from death row after new technological testing regarding their cases found them to be innocent.(1) On the reverse side of this religious outlook, there are those such as J. Melton that believe, the death penalty was started by God, himself when wrote in the bible, “He that killeth by the sword must be killed by the sword.”(Revelations 13:10). (2) There have been studies by Emory University professors, in 2003, state that each execution deters an average of 18 murders. A similar study in 2004 stated that it is believed that speeding up execution would strengthen deterrent effect. For every 2.75 years cut from time spent on death row it is said that 1 murder would be prevented. Another aspect of the death penalty is that of those who believe that rehabilitation is ineffective and capital punishment is the only punishments that is equivalent to some of the violent offenses committed and think that it is a way for closure for the families of the victims.(3) In my opinion, I believe that it is not just a…

A death penalty can also be served as a strong deterrent against potential criminals. Humans are naturally afraid of death, and would rethink again before offending the law. Death penalty can also be seen, as a way to console the victim’s families, should the criminal committed an act of murder. However, one could also argue that even if justice is served, we can never bring back the dead to life.…

When one human being kills another in cold blood, they are performing an act that does not naturally occur in nature. This kind of act is punishable by man, and anyone who makes the decision to commit this kind of a crime also makes the decision to accept the punishment that they deserve. God did not make humans in his image and likeness to go and hurt others who were created for the same purpose: to love each other and God, and spread God's message to others. The death penalty gets rid of criminals who have no respect for human life. It also protects society from the danger of having that criminal around. Someone who might not support the death penalty may say that life in prison without parole could be considered a solution. But are there really that many prisons to hold so many people in them? If so, then isn't there also the possibility that they may escape and perform the same crime over again?…

In society today there are many different opinions on capital punishment. I’m a strong believer in our nations system to bring justice and give a fair trial. I’m also pro death penalty. I believe in capital punishment only if the crime is severe in such crimes as murderers, raping, and serial killing ect. For example if a criminal is jailed, he may again commit the same crime after being released from prison. Giving him capital punishment would make sure that the society is safe from being attacked by criminals. I believe it is an appropriate punishment for serial killers and for those who continue to commit crimes even after serving there imprisonment. I believe that the death of a criminal gives closure to their victim 's (if they are still alive) and their families. And the death penalty serves as a deterrent to criminals who may be considering committing a capital offence. Also one of the main principals of the punishment and the judicial system is that the penalty fits the crime. If someone violently murders another individual or numerous people, then it makes sense for the punishment to be death right?.... Putting people in prison, as opposed to executing them gives them a chance of parole (or the small chance of escape), meaning they can commit more crimes. Capital punishment means there is no chance of the criminal committing another crime. I also believe that a person to sentenced to the death penalty that he or she has a 10 year time limit before there expiration. To appeal the sentence and bring fourth any admissible evidence to the courts to have the sentence or charges dropped or reduced and not drag on a sentence and hold a person in death row and waste tax payers money. Some anti-death penalty campaigners describe examples of people on death row, or people have already been killed have then been proven innocent. Today, the accuracy of modern forensics and DNA testing makes it very unlikely for an innocent person to be put on death row.…

The death penalty prevents more murders in society by causing one that is deserved. This is because people get scared of giving up everything for nothing. They think twice before they take a life because they can be punished by getting their life taken. The death penalty stops most people from killing others over stupid things like money, arguments, etc. Most of the people that do commit murders either don't care about there life, didn't mean to, or have some kind of anger or psychiatric problem like being psychotic, schizophrenic, bipolar and more. Many people tried to prove that the death penalty prevented murders, but there attempts were inconclusive. In 1973 Isaac Ehlrich engaged in an analysis which results showed that for every criminal executed 7 lives were saved (MSU); only because people were scared of the death penalty and didn't want to take a chance with there life. The many people that appose the death penalty say that the death penalty doesn't prevent murders, but causes them. Like criminologist William Bowers of Northeastern University says "Society is hurt by the use of the death penalty, this ups the likelihood of more murder." (MSU) I think that this is an insane idea. Even if society was brutalized by the use of the death penalty, why would they ever even think of committing more murders. The more murders that they commit the more the state would have to sentence the death penalty thus…
