Death Penalty
* Is the Death Penalty a Deterrent to Murder? * Capital Punishment * PRO * The process of lethal injection does not cause cruel or unusual punishment. The first injection renders the offender unconscious, the second paralyzes the offender, and the third injection stops the offenders heart. * OPPOSED * Death by the state is a violation of the 8th amendment, which states that no cruel or unusual punishment shall be inflicted. * Statistics * PRO * Data from 3,000 counties between the years of 1977-1996, show that with each execution, 18 murders are deterred. Resulting in 1.5 less murder of Blacks, 1.0 less murder of Whites and .5 less murder of Others (Muhilhausen, David. 6-27-07) * OPPOSED * According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Non-Death Penalty states have an almost 25% lower murder rate than their counterpart. * Proactive Verse Reactive * PRO * The belief that the death penalty will remove heinous criminals from society and prevent them from committing future murders. * OPPOSED * Since 1973, 141 people have been released from the death row with evidence of their innocence. Death is a certainty that cannot be reversed at a later time (Staff. Deathpenaltyinfo.org). * Decisions * PRO * The fact that the electric chair deters more murders than lethal injection, proves that criminals do in fact weigh the consequences of their actions. * OPPOSED * Offenders do not think about the DP when committing murders. Murders are usually crimes of passion, influenced by alcohol/drugs, or because of mental illness. People with the intent to kill do not plan on being caught, so they do not rationalize the DP. * Cost of the Death Penalty * PRO * Family and friends of the victim find that cost should not be a factor in determining the fate of the offender. Justice for the victim should be death and not the ability to live a full life in prison. * OPPOSED * On average

The death penalty has always been a controversial topic in the United States. It is outlawed in 16 states, but it should be abolished in all fifty states. The act of the death penalty is irrational, costly, inhumane, and religiously immoral. Taking an individual’s life, because he/she murdered someone is senseless and is not a good representation of the United States.…

Bruck relies on the various cases of death row inmates to persuade the reader against the death penalty. His use of facts give body to the paper but little substance to support his stance. He states that the "rate of intentional homicide declined by 17 percent" in Florida when there were no executions performed in 1983 (David Bruck, 2).…

Supporters of the death penalty always say that it is deterrent to crime but after several years of intensive research, 1)there is no proof that the death penalty is more effective than the alternatives. Furthermore the capital punishment is neither a practical nor a cost-efficient punishment. 2) In a detailed study in 2009,criminologists at the University of Texas at Dallas showed the falls information earlier studies provided, claiming that the death penalty had a deterrent effect (Christof Heyns and Juan Mendez). The government's job is it to protect the country’s citizens, but there is only little evidence that the death penalty is a strong deterrent to murder and other crimes. A recent study shows…

But does murder solve murders? According to multiple scientific studies, they don’t. In fact, in states without the death penalty, the crime rate is lower than the states that do. North Carolina’s crime rates dropped almost immediately after executions stopped. In a 2008 survey, criminologists and police chiefs around the country ranked the use of the death penalty at the bottom of a list of effective crime fighting tools. They said that more law enforcement resources were the most needed tool for reducing violent…

Opponents of the death penalty will argue that although it is said to exist as a crime deterrent, in reality it has no effect on crime at all. Modern supporters of capital punishment no longer view the death penalty as a deterrent, but as a just punishment for the crime, a shift from the attitudes of past generations.(Norman 1) Previously the deterrence argument put the burden of proof on death penalty advocates, but recently this argument has become less effective due to what one source said, "...in recent years the appeal of deterrence has been supplanted by a frank desire for what large majorities see as just vengeance." (Dionne…

I have to admit, I did have a preconceived idea of how I felt about the death penalty before reading the article in our textbook, (p.175-177), The Death Penalty in the United States and Worldwide. (Schaefer, 2009) This article really sheds some light on the whole idea of sentencing death as a punishment for a crime committed. After reading this and a few other articles, I found myself changing my opinions quite rapidly. Many reasons are the reason for this quite positive yet hasty change.…

Texas has twice the murder rate of Wisconsin, a state that doesn't have the DP. Texas and Oklahoma have historically executed the most number of DR inmates, yet in 2003 their state murder rates increased, and both have murder rates higher than the national average.…
