A Defense of Justice
“May the punishment fit the crime” (“Top Ten Arguments for the Death Penalty”).”The death penalty began in the 18th century B.C.; the methods used were crucifixion, drowning, beating, burning alive and impalement. Other methods also used were boiling, burning at stake, draw and quartering and beheading” (“Introduction to Death Penalty”). “There are 35 states with death penalty and 15 states without” (“Facts about Death Penalty”). Of all 50 states Texas has the highest number of executions since 1976. The percentage of white males executed is 56 percent, compared to 35 percent of black males executed. With males being the dominated sex executed, only 12 women have been executed since 1976 (“Facts about Death Penalty”). The most common method used for death penalty is lethal injection; it is believed to be the most humane way (“Introduction to Death Penalty”). The death penalty creates a deterrent, gives closure to the victim’s family, and justice is served to society (“Should the Death Penalty be Banned as a Form of Punishment”). Some people believe the death penalty should not be used because of the cost and the controversial argument stating it is “cruel and unusual punishment”. They also believe that some accused are sent to death innocent. Arguing the disbeliefs in the death penalty, its cost is a major factor (“Should the Death Penalty be Banned as a Form of Punishment”). In Texas the cost is 2.3 million dollars for one execution, the reason being “endless appeals, additional required procedures, judges, attorneys, and court reporters, all paid with tax payer money” (“Facts about the Death Penalty”) (“Should the Death Penalty be Banned as a Form of Punishment”). The other controversial argument against the death penalty is it being considered “cruel and unusual punishment. The Bible states an “eye for an eye”, which means a death for a death (“Exodus 21:23-25).

The death penalty has been most talked about for years, to some it is an unfair way to pass judgment on a person. The argument went as far as to say that conforming to such a method is a step backwards and offers no real solution. Critic Coretta Scott King argued strongly against the practice and rebukes the idea. One can always say what they want about the matter but insufficient knowledge with hinder their judgment. The death penalty ought to be considered as a means of punishment for those who commit ghastly murders.…

The death penalty has always been a controversial topic. Everyone has different views and opinions on how it should be handled and whether they agree or disagree with it. This paper will discuss a little bit of the history of how the death penalty came to be, how or if the death penalty deters people from committing murder, which states have abolished the death penalty and the opinion of a judge and a lawyer on the death penalty. I gathered my information from different resources including The Death Penalty by Ida Walker, Debating the Death Penalty edited by Hugo Bedau and Paul Cassell and a few Internet articles.…

The death penalty is a subject that has become very big in the 21st century. Many centuries ago the death penalty was something that was widely practiced in almost all cultures. The Death Penalty is one of the main issues hotly debated in our society today. Currently 34 of the 50 states allow the death penalty. On January 31, 2000, Illinois Governor George Ryan declared a moratorium on further executions in Illinois pending «The opportunity to review the recommendations of a commission that I will establish». The death penalty is forbidden by law in a state of Illinois today. Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill to make Illinois the 16th state to abolish the Death penalty. Since 1978 1,264 people have been executed in America, with Texas having the most executions (405 as of 2008) and Virginia second with 98 executions.…

Consider if you will, one of our Ten Commandments which states, “Thou shalt not kill." Is the death penalty not violating this commandment? In our society, it is definitely necessary to punish criminals so they will learn the lesson and not commit the crimes again. However, capital punishment is too extreme. There are people who believe it is fair to kill someone that had killed others and people who think it goes against society’s moral beliefs to take a life. The death penalty should be abolished because the mentally ill or innocent could be put to death, it violates the eighth amendment, the death penalty is biased based on the person’s race and economic standing, and costs more money than it would take for a life sentence.…

This paper is to look at the death penalty, in this authors opinion it is a good tool that is not being used to its potential. Serial killers and child murderers should be at the top of the list to be put to death they should get one appeal and this should be done in a speedy fashion. Waiting one year for new evidence is long enough in Texas there are 337 waiting on death row some as long as 1976.…

Capital punishment is used as an instrument for the judicial system to right a wrong that has been committed against society. Since the 1700s the laws surrounding the capital punishment issue have been refined through the judicial and legislature systems to the current use of today. The death penalty rests on strong foundation of symmetry and rightness. 11 The primary goal has evolved from one for state security to a more focused goal of doing justice and controlling crime.12 The globalization and the inequality are both factors in the controversy of the deterrence of capital punishment. Cesare Bonesana di Beccaria, a philosopher in Italy, wrote “An Essay on Crime and Punishment” in 1764.8 The concerns he stated about the use of death as a punishment are very much the same today of judicial failures, inequality, and effect of deterrence. Beccaria's review was translated into several languages and very well known throughout the world in 1764. He is regarded as the most influential person in changing society’s perception of the death penalty.…

The Death Penalty has been a part of the American Justice system since its inception. When European settlers came to the new world they brought the practice of capital punishment with them. As society progressed and evolved, so did the way we apply the death penalty. Capital punishment laws have continually changed to reflect our values; when, how and why we apply death has changed drastically since its first use in colonial times. The reason death as punishment has existed throughout history is because it is a necessary function of society. The prospect of death can serve as a warning to would be murders therefore it serves a purpose within the system. Knowing the person responsible has paid for their crimes helps give closure to the loved ones of murder victims. Capital punishment as we know it today is used sparingly and not without much deliberation and due process. Mentally ill, mentally retarded, Juveniles and pregnant women are exempt from death sentences; currently 18 states have abolished Capital punishment. (Hartley). There are some crimes whose severity is such that the perpetrators of these acts cannot be allowed to exist; this is not barbarism, but justice.…

The United States is quite divided on the death penalty topic. While there are many supporters of it, there is also a large amount of opposition. Currently, there are thirty-three states in which the death penalty is legal and seventeen states that have abolished it (Death Penalty Information Center). I believe the death penalty should be legal throughout the nation. There are many reasons as to why I believe the death penalty should be legalized in all states, including disincentives, compensation, and morality; and because opposing arguments do not hold up, I will argue that the ideas of the death penalty are unconstitutional, irrevocable mistakes are made, and that there is a disproportionality of race and income level.…

The death penalty is an ongoing controversy in the United States. There are people that are for it and those that oppose it. I am for it, but only for the horrendous crimes that are committed today in our society. In my personal opinion, I think priests that molest or "take advantage" of little boys deserve the death penalty. In today's society, this is one of the most controversial debates whether capital punishment should be outlawed.…
