Dealing With Dragons Character Analysis
In the fantasy novel Dealing with Dragons, Patricia Wrede tells the tale of an intelligent princess who refuses to act like a proper princess. In this fictional set in medieval times, a proper princess was to do as she is told, marry who her parents say, and dress and act beautifully. Cimorene is justified in ignoring the expected social norms of the day because it did not benefit her life, but some may disagree.
First of all, Cimorene is justified in ignoring expected social norms because they did not benefit her in any way. For instance, Cimorene says, “ Boring. I want to do things, not sit around all day and listen to the court minstrel make up things about how brave Daddy is and how lovely his wife and daughters are.” (Wrede 5). Being a normal princess was not making her happy, so when she became a dragon princess making cherries jubilee, she was glad to be one. One move helped her live a happy one. The text also states, “ Happily ever after? I don’t think it’s quite what you meant, Alianora, but one way or another, I rather think I will.” (Wrede 212). Although she might not live ever after. She thinks she will be very happy from now on. This shows that she benefited greatly from acting like herself.

You’re a princess; it simply isn’t done.” (Wrede 7). This explains that her actions were not proper. It also includes that when you are a princess, you have to act like one.
